CoinmciiiornUoii Day.
Thursday the 10th inst., was solemnly
observed here. In the afternoon a large
concourse of the young and old, male and
female, assembled at the Methodist Church;
from, whence, after appropriate services,
they moved in procession to the different i
Churches. The monument and tl.e graves I
of our noble dead, were profusely decorated
with beautiful flowers and evergreens, j
During the services and decorations, the j
Church bells were tolled.
Let us continue to observe this day and
|
perform our work of love—love for our dear j
dead ones who died gloriously in the effort i
to achieve our independence, to mantam our ;
liberties and establish outright to self gov- ,
ernme.it. That their efforts were in vain, '
should make their memories dearer to us. j
They were'not rebels: they fill the graves of |
defeated jxitrint*.
Let tl.o little ones, yearly take a /.mmi- .
nnit part in these Cerotnouies, so that when
wg pass away, they will .stand in our place; (
and, with hearts as full as ours, with love as ;
warm as ours and With a hatred for our eu - :
lilies as intense ns our’s—teach the:r little
ones to love and reverence the memories of |
our heroes—to scorn affiliation rrth their !
murderers or their descendants and attest, as •
we do, the cl lints of our immortal dead to j
the respect and admiration of the world— ;
Let th.m learn even now. to tell with pride \
of the trial, toils, sufferings and wants endur
ed by our soldiers; of the od.is against which i
they contended; how generous they were in I
the hour of victory, and with what true man- ‘
lincss they endured defeat. Let them meet j
taunts with scorn, and boastings with con. I
tempt. Let them with flushed checks, and |
flashing eyes, tell hnw, after all that valor
and patriotism could achieve ha 1 failed—|
failed in a conflict against the icurFl—their )
father’* yielded and lowered their glorious j
flag, blackened with the dust of battle and |
stained with patriot blood.
Teach our little ones this lesson, and j
Freedom will yet revive and assert her right !
to dominion.
