Directly the disaster oerurred the fire boM

Court-room, which is immediately above the
hall of the House of Delegates. At the same
time the dense crowd filled the Supreme
Court-room, a Conservative caucus was iu
session in the House of Delegates, below.
At about 11 o’clock, the floor of the court
room gave way, and the crowd were precipi
tated in the hall of the House of Delegates.
Many perse is escaped by jumping into the
windows when the floor gave way. It is im
possible, at this hour, to ascertain the num
ber of persons injured, but it is supposed
that twenty members of the State Legisla
ture are killed or wounded.
• Among the killed are: Patrick Henry
Aylett, a distinguished lawyer and the for
mer editor of the Richmond Times; Dr.
J. B. Brock, (formerly a surgeon in the
Confederate army. ; reporter for the Kni|iiirer
and Examiner , Samuel Eaton, clerk of Mr.
Chahoon, the military Mayor of Rivhmond:
Captain Wm. A. Charters, thief engineer of
who had gathered to recognize the slain. The
park was filled with anxious weeping men
and womeu until 2 o’clock, when the last Vic

this the police closed the park, refusing en
trance *o any one, the deed having been sent
out. All the stores iu the city wera closed
and placards put upon the doors, ‘Closed
inconsequence of the disaster at the capitol.”
No more business was done during the day.
To-night meetings were held of members
of the Press Association, members of the
late military associations, and members of the
Bar and the citizens generally'.
To-morrow will be a day of general uiourn-

SECOND DISPATCH.
In addition to the particulars before sent,
the following are given :
About 11 o’clock this 'morning, the Su
preme Court of Appeals, of Virginia, was
crowded with eminent citizens, many local
politicians and a great many of the public at
large were drawn there by curiosity to hear the
result of the late hearing of the question of
the mayoralty of Richmond. The friends of
Messrs, Ellyson and Chahoon, comprising the
prominent Republicans and Conservatives of
the city, had assembled to hear the decision

This is one amongst the many outrageous
swindles that have been forced upon the
honest tax-paj’ing citizens of this thoroughly
radicalized County, and the indifference man
ifested by the tax-payers is remarkable in
the face of this gigantic affair, and it is as.
tonishing that they submit so tamely. Vi ould
not any disinterested man say that stealing
was at the bottom of this transaction from
the fact that the County Commission
ers awarded the contract to the. Party
making the highest bid, while parties ma.
king less Lids otiered ample security for the
faithful completion of the job ? The infer
ence drawn by every honest tax-payer is,
that the County has been adroitly relieved
of about 21,500 more of their hard earned

818,500, and offered Dr. J. E.lhk>ra, ana t
It. Ragsdale, as seciitity. This bid was flat
ly refused to be oons.<jercd, on account of
statements made by one F. A Thomas, to
the effect that Byrd and Ragsdale were
broke, and that a bond made by them would
be of no account. Immediately upon learn
ing this, Byrd and Ragsdale, wrote Jonathan
Wright, Chairman of the Board of County
Commissioners, entering a protest against
this high handed piece of rascality, and of
fered Jesse Keith, and Thomas Stephenson,
of tiiis County, and W. K. Ryan, aud fag-
horn Herring & Co., of Charleston, as ad
ditional security. A bond made by these
parties would be good for half a million of
dollars. Why was this not amply sufficient I
Simply because Cannon & Brown, did not
offer the Couuty Commissioners enough mo
ney to induce them to accept the bond. A
Lad feature iu the case is, that all bids but
that of Mr. Marco, were summarily rejected,
aud he was allowed by (do indulgent Com
missioners, until Saturday night to fill his
magazine, and worthy' of their suport and
cucoaragement. Wc would, therefore, re
spectfully urge upon all our readers, young
nod old, that, before spending their money
for puVlictions emanating from the North and
abraad, they first cuter their names as subscri
bers to the “XIX Century" as that possesses
prior claims to any other. The subscription
price is $3.50 per annum. The Juno
