Dear Democrat:
Seeing paper, pen and ink, on the mer
chant? desk, and being left aiono save these
companions, your corespondent will avail
himself of the opportunity to drop you a few
brief notes. You have heard of Socie
ty Hill, if you have never arrived at the
summit of its social happiness. Well, the
“Hill" is just on the other side of Smoots’
Store, The Society is, ‘ here a little” and
“theri. a liltle.” Two new stores have late
ly been erected in this village, to the appa
rent discomfiture of oue or two “ante-Bel-
lum” merchants. The “Hill may he a “Town”
after awhile. “Here's hopin'' anyhow.—
You know they have got a ‘big’ bridge over
the “Great Fee-Dee'' up here—It pay’s

stand at the helm and draw. The weary
traveller ean find repose, good cheer ,anj
social cnterUuxnent at the hnspitble board
of Mrs. J. E. Gandy, at Mrs. Douglas’ old
stand. The merfhants at the “Hill” never
advertise One of the old ones told me some
time ago that “it wouldn’t pay, for every
body knew where the “Hill” was. His store
is not far from the Hill.
This portion of Darlington County can
boast of some of the best firm era, substan

the State..

He is spoken of by the citizens generally,
as polite, accommodating and conscientious
in the discharge [of his duties. Several A

The Democrat is taken at the house from
which I write. Long may it wave.

used iu this section this year; it stood the
