Daniel Bryan had be«**» * f* w y <>r of emi

to beggary and a dying condition. Bryan
bad married in bettar day* the inter of Mo*c*
Felton.
At length iH hope* were given up. Week
after week would the fallen man lie drunk
on the faor, nod not n day of real aobriety
marked hie oourae. I doubt if auch another
caae was known. He waa too low for con
viviality, for those whom he would have
associated with would not drink with him
All alow* in hiaeAee and chamber, he still
continued to drink, and even his weary life
seemed the eflspring rf hia jug.
In early spring Moaea Felton had a sail to
go to Ohio. Before he act out he visited his
sister. He offered to take her with him, but
she would not go.
“But why stay heter' urged the brother.
“You are fading away, and disease is upon
you. Why should you live with such a
brute r
“Hush, Moses, speak not so,” answered
the wife, keeping back her tears. “I will
not leave him now, but be will leave me. lie
can not live much longer."
At that moment Dauiel entered the apart
ment. He looked like a wanderer from the
tomb. “Ah, Muses, how arc ye?” he gaspedt
for he could not spa ik plainly.
The visitor looked at him a few moment'
in silence. Then, as his features assumed
a cold, tender expression, he said in u strong
ly emphaiiaud tone : “Daniel Bryan, I have
been your best friend but one. My sister is
an augol. though matched with a demon. I
have loved you, I'a ilel, as I never loved m: n
before you were generous, noble and kind; but
1 bate you now, for you are a perfect devil
incarnate. Look at that woman. She is
my sister ; she might now live with me in com
fort, only that she will not come to me. Thus
do I pray that Ood will soon give her joys to
my keeping. Now, Daniel, I do sincerely
hope that the first intelligence that reaches
me from my native place after I have reached
my new home may be—TAut—Vuu—ore
Brad!”
■ Stop, Moses; I can reform yet.”
“You can not. It is beyond your power.
You hive bad inducements enough to have
reformed half the sinners of creation, and yon
are lower than ever before Go and die, sir,
soon as you oan, for the moments that sees
you will not find me among the mourners.*’
Bryan's eyes flashed, and he drew himself
proudly up. “Go,” he said, in the tone of
the old sarcasm. “Go to Ohio, and I’ll send
you news. Go, sir, and watch the post,
will yet make you take buck your words '*
‘.Never, Daniel Bryan, never !”
“You shall! I sweat f*
AVith these words Daniel Bryan hurled
the jug into the fire place, and while yet a
thousand fragments were flying over the floor,
he strode from the house.
Mary sank fainting ou the floor. Moses
bore her to the bed, and, then having called
in a neigh l* r. be hurried away, forth# stage
was waiting*
For a month Daniel hovered over the
brink of the grave, bm V.did not die., -V

lie did live. An iron will conquered the
messenger death sent—Daniel Bryan lived.
For one month he could not even walk with
out help. Mary helped him.
A year pasted away, and Moees Felton
returned to Vermont. He entered the court-
houso at Burlington, and dauiel Bryan was
ou the floor pleading for a young man who
hail been indicted for forgery. Felton start
ed in surprise. Never before had such tor
rents of eloquence poured from his lips. Tlie
case was given to the jury, and the youth was
accquitted. The successful councel turned
from the court-room and met Moses Felton.
They shook hands, but did not speak.
When they reached a spot where Done others
could bear them, Bryan stuped.
“Moses,” be said, “do you remember the
words you spoke to me it year ago ?,’
“I do, Dauiel."
“Will you now take them back—unsay
them now and forever ?’*
“Yes, with all my heart.”
“Then I am in part repaid."
■And what must be the remainder of pay
ment ?” asked Moses.
••I must die an honest, unperjured mau !
The oath that has bound me thus far was
made for life.”
That evening Mary Browyi was among the
happiest of the happy.

Stay yam ago, the •writer cf these linos and an ir.rslid physieUa, while visiting th#
Island of St. Croix for th#ir hsalth, experienced and rritaccsed many surprising and
beneficial effects of the Bum there produced upon many of the invalids who were (like
ourselves) seeking health ; and, upon inquiry and Investigation, obtained a fall history
of its medicinal virtues. Ee was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery,
which soon occurred, determined, if possible, to procure the sole right to manufacture
and sell it in the United States.
The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and offering humanity,
for the celebrated PLANTATION EITTESS was thus made known to tho world. PLAN
TATION BITTEB3 being an article sf real merit, founded upon new principles, and
relying wholly upon tho vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid roveto-
tion in the history of medicine, and became as a household word all over the civilised
world. The cabalistic S. T.—1860—X. was a talisman of health, and the demand for
the PLANTATION EITTSBS soon far exceeded the abilities of the propriefon’te supply.
Notwithstanding the large importation cf St. Croix Bum, made expressly for the com
pounding of these Sitters, the quantity was inadequate. It therefore became necessary
that arrangements upon an extensive scale abroad should at oace be made, and an agent
was dispatched to SL Thomas for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and
leasing several plantations on some of tho largest and moat productive estates on the
island. Houses, stills and presses were erected as if by magic, which utterly “ aston
ished the natives.'' The services of experienced men and natives of the island wsra p#fr
cured, and very seen tho proprietors sf the PLANTATION 3ITTEBS were in a position
to supply their laboratory with all the perfectly pure St Croix Bum needed in minufao-
taring the GBSAT DYSPEPTIC TONIC AND INYIGCBATOB. The than cut represent*
the natives crushing the sugar-cane and otherwise preparing it for tha stQli and pnm*.
As an antidote to Ftvsr and Ague, Intermittent and Malarious Pevers, Dyspepsia, and
ether kindred diseases, the use of the PLANTATION BITTERS is unsurpassed in tha
history of ths world. Over five million bottles are disposed of annually. They ar#
adapted to old and young, male and female. They are agreeabie tataatfa and always
produce an immediate beneficial result.
