A Mimvr'n lle<‘lns«. c Tfce foll.)wiDK particulars of the death of the singular Jersey City miser, the fact of r which ha* been already announced, will be read with interest. We find the account in the New York Times of Saturday : r -* ' On Wednesday cycning last, Lyman Al fa, an aged boarder at Taylor’s Hotel, in Jersey City, was found dead sitting in bis chair in hia room. Hi* death was duly re- jiorted on the following morning, but there were circumstances developed yesterday which Kurrouuded hia life and death with peculia interest. His brother, Thus. Allyn, of Orotou, in company with a sister the ouly relative of thedoooascd, arrived yester day. sod, with the penoiaeioa of Coroner llurna, took charge of the corps. They ex amined also the two dilapidated trunks that stood in the corner of their brother’s bed room, and in one of them were found stocks and bonds, deeds and securities of various de- scriptioua representing a fortune of 8000 - ooa ffia life during the past five years had been most remarkable. He was a man over seventy, and so infirm that he consumed half ^ , hour or more in coming down from his * room to the dining room. Yet he lived up- ■on the higliest ioor to save money, end was o never known when upon upon the street, to 4.^-. use a horse car. saying that they had the S?' efleet of making a man lasy, arid be would . not patronise them. He came from his room f ‘ A <o his meals but once a day, eating tbe very t'-aal lest quantity of the cheapest food. Ha .vp&y-'Vmght "o society, and would permit no per- r - hi to enter his room but the chambermaid, nd she but once a week. While she ar- nigcd his room, he invariably watched her e o ely. To an observer, the room contained very iitlj that was worth watching. Two old trunks, a scanty wasdrobe, made up of cheap ready-made coats, two hats, one white, the other black, and both thirty yearsold, patch ed shoes and boots, a copy of Webster* Dio- •Miiry, a bible, amt a medical book, was all i.t the room contained, and its situation •nd interior disolatencss made it a dreary .•node. The old man had lived here alone tor nearly six years, declining all the while to see any visitors, for, he said, the came mly because they though the had money— that they were mistaken, for he was very poor, and had great difficulty in paying his board bills. His brother and sister, who took charge of his effects, gave our reporter a brief sketch of his life. He was born in Groton, Conn., in 1797. and was sent at on early age by his father, to work in a grocery store in New iioiidnn. Finding that hi* employer was lishoncst, and that he used false weights 1‘id measures, the boy ran away and return ed home. He soon procured a situation in another store, remaining there for a number of years, until, in 1827,he came to New York id engaged in business as a commission icrchant. lleooming interested in stock speculations, under the adviee and in part nership with Jacob Little, Mr. Allyn amassed •t Urge fortune, wheel* -Discqueut specula- ^ in* did miseti to radnoa. During 1 stay at Tayhr’s Hr tel, he was occupied cutirjly in looking after thevstue of and the interest upon his bends arid stocks, keeping l.is busiuesa, however, in ao great secrecy that not even the proprietor of the hotel had the faintest intimation that bis guest was a wealthy capitalist. His bills were paid with ne greatest promptitude, but beyond this .'■< no person in the hotel had grounds for ling that the old man had a dollar, •upaiiou, meanwhile, was entirely un- .1. and many speculations were indulged .. hi.i fellow-boarders touching the work fell kept the recluse sc much coufined to I-is garret- Wednesday afternoon the bill collected Mr. Allyn’s bill to his room, knocked, received no auswer, and could gain no ! nuance- He threw the bill into the • 1111 over the door and went a Way. The ’ .y wore away, and it was remarked that the l gentlemen was not so prompt as forrocr- . , iu responding to the presentation of his bill. Mr. Fisk, the proprietor, went to his room, and receiving no answer to his calls, the door was forced open and the aged oc- cup mt was found lifeless in his chair. PLAN TATION BRTEBI being an erticie of real merit, founded upon new principlee, and relying wholly upon the vegetable world forita medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu tion in the history of medicine, and became as a household word all over the dviHaed world. The cabalistic S. T.-1860-X. wa* a talisman of health, and the demand for the PLANTATION BIT TENS soon for exceeded the abilities of the proprietbn to supply. Notwithstanding the large importation of St. Croix Rum, made expressly for (he eem- pounding ef these Bitten, the quantity was inadequate. He wae fortunate in securing end leasing several on acme of the largest and most productive estates on the Island. Be tree, stills and presses were erected as if by magic, which utterly ” astca- bhad the aatl-ree.” The services ef experienced men and natives of the Island were pro cured, and very seen the proprietors of the PLANTATION BITTERS were in a peeitlon to supply their laboratory with all the perfectly pure St Croix Rum needed in manufo*- tnrfng the ORXAT DYSPEPTIC TONIC AND INVIOORATOR.
