The cutting down of the few remaining

Jttr Editor :—There ha* been much talk
about the necessity, and utility of a public
.‘scale in the village. A month ago nearly
all our merchants, and a majority of the cit
izens of the town signed a petition to our
•‘■Town Cottucil,” asking that a public Scale
le established, and an ordinance passed com
pelling all persons to have their produce, es
pecially cotton, weighed by a sworn weigher.
This measure was intended to strike at the
root of the rascality which was cheating the
poor negro out of bis hard earned wages, and
and depriving the honest Merchant of his
share of business. The measure was there
fore popular with all honest men white and
black—all seemed delighted with the idea—
even those of the ‘Town Council” who were
opposed to it, said they would yield their
views to an expression of public opinion.
They have had that expression and have
done nothing. The time has gone by when
their action could be of any use this season
Does the Council intend to do anything ? or
will they wait until a Council of a different
complexion takes their place, and give them
the opportunity of passing this ordinance,
and establishing tlm moral worth of Darling
ton. If the “Town Council” wants another :
and stronger expression of public opinion on
this subject wc arc sure they can have it. j

eating into the vitals of the body politic.

EQUITY LIFE INSURANCE CO.,

Reasons tchy Every One Should Insure in
the Equitable Life Insurance Company of
1 Irginiu.
1st. It is more LIBERAL to the Insurers than
an}’ other Company, and will eventually become
Purely Mutual and belongs to the Ixsckku.
2d. It circulates i- 0 money amongst its patrons
who are the Insurers. Consequently they are
getting the benefit of the rapid accumulations of
the Company, the money being invested by the
Board of Directors among the insuress. There
fore the the insurers are building up an institu
tion peculiarly their own, and conducted for
their benefit.
3d. The loans of this Company are as liberal
as other companies, who declare dividends a* the
end of the second, third and fourth veins, but
this company at the end of the first and every
year. Thereby the xn. urer ?*vcs reve.ral ycavV
