Wt efip from the Umov Timet the follow-
in" notice of tho Agricultural Fair lately
Lei* in Oofninbia, 8. C.
•‘The Agri.mluirul Fair Columbia, on
Wednesday,Thursday and Friday oflastweek
was a perfect success. Kverything was favor
able, and every one was pleased, the rain of
Tusday war sufficient to settle the diut, and
not enough to make the gromid muddy. The
fair days were clear and bright. The Ex
hibition. in every department, was creditable.
Horses, mules and cattle, hogs sheep and
poultry, showed that careful stock-raising
were not wanting in our State. Cotton, ramie,
rice, wheat , oata. &c., were placed there by
anccessful planters. Improved cotton-presses,
wheat- thrashers, and agricultural machine
ry of different kinds, attracted the attention
of progressive farmers. Andso, too, in every
department of industry, this fair gave evi
dence of South Carolina ingenuity and energy.
Union was there, competing successful for
several premiums, as the prize-list shows.
In many respects, the fair was pleasant
reunion of South Carolinians. It was a State
affair. South Carolina managed and controlled
it; the money of our own people carried it
through. Nothing came from the State-offi
cials- Politics were eschewed, and men of
prominent position, republican in principle,
entered the gates with oomplimentary ticlwts.
Rut others, now holding high office in the
present State government, went ns the hum
blest citizen, if they went at all. There was
no cringing, no botying of the knees, and the
Executive Committee, by their action, have
satisfied us, that exalted position, when not
hold by gentlemen, tempts not the homage
of South Carolinians And it was a reunion
of friends long parted. Every section of the
State was represented, by a goodly number
of her citizens. , From three or four thousand
people could be seen every day upon the
grounds and in the hall. Since the war, no
such gathering has been had in the State, of
her own sons and daughters; who love her
still, as dearly as ever, as a thing apart from
her preaent rulers.
A N;id Accident.
We clip from an Exchange the following
account of a sad accident, which oecured in
Columbia, during tho scsion of the late Agri-
cuuurat cao
holder under Grant, whose peculiar pets, it
seems, can well afford to make him valuable
presents.

Maysviiu, S. C., Nov. 15.1SG9.
Wc happened to bo at Kingstrcc on Fri
day last; we arrived at that place on the
morning train by the North Eastern Rail
Road, and found a large assemblage of ne
groes congregated WUjrc the Court House.
At the corner of each street there was a
crowd, all sizes, ages, sexes and conditions
were there—tho young the middle-aged, and
the old: the young and stout, tho old and
feeble, the Mind, the halt, the lame and the
lazy, all in various groups, waiting, “Micaw-
ber-like, tor something to turn up.
Wc con'd see that something unusual had
caused them to meet, and our curiosity was
excited to know what it was. AVe asked sev
eral negroes what was the occasion of their
meeting, but they were reticent. Each one
of them appeared to happen there without
knowing the why or the wherefore. One
old fellow however, more communicative
cf the negroes think they might as well have
the place, and for all tho good he does, can
fill the place and take the prr diem and the
mileage. Some time ago the negroes were
directed by AA'hittemore; now they arc as
free as hots. Go it AA'hittemore! Go it ne-

‘•The painful accident, which closed the i
late Fair at Columbia, threw a feeling of
sadness over the whole exhibition. A sud
den death, at a time like that, when all are
experiencing a buoyancy of spirit, is apt to
affect, us with gloom; but in addition to this,
young Gnighard died so horribly—crushed
to death beneath the weight of his own horse!
He was a gtiod rider, and was no stranger to
to the saddle; bat he was unable to get off in
time from his falling horse. The horse was
•track by another, and lost Lis balance; he
plunged and reared in his efforts to gain it,
and at last fell over on his back, with AA’illie
Guignard beneath him. The horse made
thre* aovsrsl efforts to rise and fell back
again upon bis master; and once he pawed
the forehead of his victim. But from the
time of the first fall, until 1 $ P. M., on Satur
day. when he died, poor young Guignard
was unconscious of friends, of thought, of pain
or anything.”

Nov. 20.—Cotton steady at 355c. Flour

Mr. AA'hittemore. He heard that Mr. AVhit- cordidg to grades
temore had some land he was going to divide
among the negroes, and he wanted to get a
piece, if he could. AA’hcn the mules were
being shared among them last year they gave
out before they got to AVilliamsburgh and
ho hoped the land would reach far enough to
give him a piece anyway, and if so be be
could get some land ho could wait until Mr.
AA'hittemore got another supply of mules.
After our business was done, and wc had
loitered about the village, waiting for the
evnuiug train, until we were tired—you
know, Mr. Editor, how tiresome it is “to
wait for tho wagon”—we saw the negroes
moving towards that old building known as
Staggers’ Hotel. It was announced that Mr.
AVbitfcmore would address his constituents
from the piazza of tho Hotel.
AA r c moved down with the crowd. Any
thing to kill time was acceptable then, aud a
speech from AVhittemore would do as well
as anything else. AVe got there in time fir
the commencement and we stayed as long as
AVhittemore whittled.
He spoke under u pressure, something
weighed on his mind, not on his conscience ;
for even the negroes have the knowledge of
the fact that he was manuttetured in Massa
chusetts where they leave sucl things out of

A man named Adolph Mycr, apparently
sf Jewish birth, recently established a silver
smith’s shop at Appomattox Court House
He remained about a mouth during which
time he was well patronized. At the end of
it he decamped, taking with him some five
or six gold aud some twenty silver watches,
supposed tobc worth several hundred dollars.
Nothing is known of the direction taken by
h.ui
It is hoped that the following description
of the swindler may lead to his identification
and arrest: He is a low man, with dark hair,
somewhat curly; speaks broken English; is
about-five feet six inches high about twenty-
five years old; has a cocked eye aud a down-’
cast look; bis right eye is the larger; his eyes
are dark; wears a moustache, and a stove
pipe hat which has been cut down, AA’hen
he left he had on a gray suit. He was last
seen at the Court House Sunday night.
Myer recently did business at Living
ston Depot, in Nelson county. lie signs his

New Orleans. All honest people are warned
to he on their guard against him.—Lyurh-

More Kcpiiblifaii Fraud.
Another member of the God-and-morality
yet. If you owe a negro, you must pay him.
Holding to bail for contracts is done away
with, in most cases, and the ert sa, is an unu
sual process in those days; but. sir, a negro
can collect a small bill where a ca. sa. or a
bail writ would fail to accomplish anything.
AA’hittcmoro has filled his basket with
chips. Ho is unwilling to give place, as yet,
to any of his less fortunate confreres, but l.o
wants a new jack knife. The old one will
uot cut.
AA’c expected when we saw AA'hittomore-
come out to speak to ttie crowd, that he
had some new <insil to dazziejjieir eyes with
some new tones to his bell wim which to de
light their ears; lutwe were disappointed.
He wants a jack knife and something to cut.
Can’t you got up a subscription for him, to
enable him to buy a now jack knife? AVe
will furnish the whittling stuff.
AA’hittemore pleased the negroes as long as
he talked of the white man aud his desire to
cheat the negro. He pleased them mightily.
He tickled their fancies by telling them that
in those places where there was most steal
ing on the part of the negro, there was most
unfair dealing on the part of the white. He
excused his dear pets for their thievish pro
pensities.
“A fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind.’’
H e came, at last, as lie had to do. to (he
land question, you ought to have been there
to see how cautiously he approached it.
It had to come however. There was no
dodging it. The negroes wanted to hear
something about that land. Well, sir, they
heard it. It was worth hearing and worth
seeing. The negroes did not expect to hear
Mr. Whittcmorc say that if they wanted land
they had to buy it aud pay fur it. Oh ! no*
no such thingl They came to hear of the
land being divided out. They came to get
their share of it, and they went home curs
ing, not only deeply but loudly. The reti
cence of the morning was gone- They could
tell you how they were summoned to Kings
trcc and why they came—they were commu
nicative after \Vhittemore's speech. Thev
could tell you what they expected in the
morning and what they did not get, what
they were promised and what they did not
