Who Jived in Flor-i-da,
/nd uml to curl himself o nights,
Under a pile of hay ;
And dined on little pig-i-es
For which he did not pay ;
In totcin chickens from their roosts.
He had a funny way.
Her name was Arabella Smith,
A strougish minded girl.
Whose light complexioncd, yellow hair,
Had never learned to curl.
She kept the village school, she did.
And was the village pearl;
And tiie first time I met with her.
My heart was in a whirl.
It wai^ln Stass-aSdm-si-oatw^

And fondly hoped that Arabella
Had dore the same with me ;
I told hor lots of soft, sweet things,
Doan by the salt, salt aca.
In all progressing movc-mi-enta
We were among the van,
And walked together to the church
Called Uni-tari-an;
Wherein they prcachrd about the wronged,
Down-trodden African;
We used to think Charles Bum-ni-er
A most gu-lo-ri-ous man.
So when the freedmen were set free,
My Arrabella thought
She had a mission unto those
Who valiantly fought:
And so we went to Florida,
To see what they were taught.
Where, in the Freedmen’s Bureau, ^«he
Most diligently wrought.
’Twas there she met with Ponrpey Jowcs,
Who slept beneath the hay,
And dined on little pork-i-es
For which he did not pay,
And with his banjo and his bones
He stole her heart away ;
8o off they went to Capt. Jenks,
And married were ono day.
Now I am left disconsolate.
With comforts not a one,
And nights and days I sh*d dry tears,
Because the thing was done;

October is usually a beautiful month for
cotton picking, ami the work should be

that none may rot in the fields. To mal:

Uasy yc-irs t£0, the writer cf these lines end an invalid physician, whiic rldting the
Island of St. Croiz fer thsir health, espericneed and witn;::' d many surprising and
beneficial effects cf the Sun there produced upon suay cf the invalid: who were ilile
ourselves) seeking health; and, upon inquiry and investigation, obtained a foil history
of its medicinal virtues. He was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery,
which soon eecurrod, determined, if possible, to procure the tele right to manufacture
and soil it in the United States.
The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering humanity,
for the celebrated PLANTATION EITTSiiS was thus cade known to the world. PLAN
TATION BTT73PS being an article of real merit, founded upon now principles, and
relying wholly upon the vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu
tion in the history of medicine, and became as a household word all over the civihnod
world. The cabalistic S. T.—1SGC--S. was a talisman cf health, and the^emand for
tho PLANTATION 2ITTEP.S seen far crccedcd the abilities of the proprietor^ to supply.
Notwithstanding the large importation cf St. Crois Sum, made expressly for tho com
pounding cf theso litters, tho quantity was inadequate. It therefore became necessary
that arrangements upon an extensive scale abroad should at once be made, and an agent
was dispatched to St, Thomas for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and
leasing several plantations on some of the largest and most productive estates on the
island. Houses, stills and presses were erected as if by magic, which utterly “aston
ished the natives." The services of experienced men and natives of the island were pro
cured, and very soon the proprietor: of the PLANTATION PITTSES were in a position
to supply their laboratory with all the perfectly pure St. Crois Eum needed in manufac
turing the C-E2AT DTSPEPTIC TONIC AND HTYIOOEATOE. Tho above cut rspresenta
the natives crushing the sugar-cane and otherwise preparing it for tho stills and presses.
As an antidote to Fever and Ague, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, Dyspepsia, and
other kindred diseases, the uso of the PLANTATION EITTESS is unsurpassed la the
history of the world. Over 3ve million bottles are disposed of annually. They are
adapted to old and young, male and female. They are agreeable Ir taste, and always
produce an immediate beneficial result,
