POWDItRCO., New York. SAM JONES ON BRr AN. What the Evangelist Thinks of the Nebraskan. The Rev. Sam Jones was in the city this morning: and was asked by a Journal reporter what he thought of Mr. Bryan’s recent lecture in Atlanta. Ha said: “I have read the reports be fore and after the lecture. I have been more of less in the lecture business myself for flf teen years. Mr. Bryan’s lect ure as reported by the press in Atlanta would not sell for 10 cts a dozen in any market in the world. It reminds me of the Valley of Dry Bones, without the hope that they would ever rattle again. In the flurry and confussion of a political cam paign Mr. Bryan is a boy orator, but his lecture on ‘The Old Landmarks’ was stillborn, and he had better bury the kid. “People who pay 50 cents or $1.50 at the door want enter tainment. Mr. Bryan detained them from all reports, but did not entertain them. A lecture to go, as the saying is, must have pith, p’int and pathos. It must have common sense, logic, wit, sarcasm and humor. In other words, a lecturer ought to play upon his audience like a trained musician plays upon a piano, sweeping the whole key board. “Mr. Bryan was a bigger man a week ago in Atlanta than he is today. Really when a man rides a hobby for six months he cannot ride any sort of a horse unless it is on rockers. Mr.Bryan said one thing while in Atlanta. He said he w as sorry he made that contract to deliver fifty lectures. He must get him a different subject and handle it in a different way if he wants to get there on the lecture plat form. Free silver is one thing and an entertainment worth a dollar and a half is another.”— Atlanta Journal. GAIN IN SOUTHERN EXPORTS. It Amonnted to $63,000,000 in the First Ten Months of 1896 and to $18,000,000 in Oclober. Baltimore, Dec. 23.—The Manufacturers’ Record, in its weekly review of the business interests of the South, publish es detailed statements showing the value of exports from Southern ports during the first ten months of 1896, as compar ed with the corresponding period of 1895. These figures show a gain for the perioid un der review of $63,000,000, while the gain for the entire country was $134,000,000, nearly one half of the gain having been at Southern ports. This, increase in trade from Southern ports, however, has been growing at an accelerating rate during the last few months, airti a com parison for the last three or four months would show a still more marked advance in the South. This is brought out in statement of exports for Octo ber, showing the total value from Southern ports to have been $49,250,000, against $31, 497,000 last year, a gain of $18,000,000, while the increase in October exports from the en tire country was $26,000,000. Thus from Southern ports there was a gain for the month of $18,000,000, against a gain from all other United States ports of only $8,000,000. Comparing the value of exports for the ten months of 1896 and 1895 the gains at the leading Southern ports were as follows: Newport News $3,100,000, Norfolk $2,- 800,000, Wilmington $1,700,000, Corpus Christi $1,500,000, Gal veston $13,3000,000, Mobile $1, 700,000, New Orleans $25,000,000 Baltimore $16,000,000, Pensa cola $1,8000,000 Buckten's Arnica Salve. A London Times Opinion The ignorance of the English newspapers concerning Ameri can poliiics is one of the stock themes of Amsrican writers of comic paragraphs and it is' growing stale, but when the London Times gravely at tributes the troubles of the detn- ocratic party, so called, and its rejection of Cleve'and, to the Venezuelan measa e of la-' year, one is compelled to admit that there is -till reason to laugh at the Briton’s ignorance If Mr Cleveland has at any time pleased the “regular” w 'tig of the democracy, the crowd that supported the pop ulist candidate in the recent election, it was when* he returned from a duck hunt last winter and fired that Vene Zivlutt cannon cracker The f.-w bar.h'-ritics of Mr. i'leve land at that time »ere his best friends—including the news papers like the New York Post and Harper’s Weekly which in general have been his steadfast friends The Morgans and Har rises and all that parcel of statesmen werfe delighted with the Venezuelan message and. indeed, the American people were practically united in sup porting it. As they should have been. Europe was knocked silly by that message and Europe is sick over it yet —Charleston Post. We have heard so much of late years about heredity that to many the word has become but another name for fate— unescapable. A more hopeful and cheerful view of the mat ter, however, is taken by Dr J. J. Morrissey in his learned and suggestive article on “Heredi tary Influences and Medical Pro gress” in the January Arena. He says: “Of a particular class of diseases from which our ancestors suffered, by careful living and the judicious use of therapeutics we can eliminate many of the predisposing causes which lead up to those diseases and secure immunity from them. The fact that hereditary diseases change their form in descent from generation to generation shows that they arise from a subtle faculty condition of the constitution which can be, as was observed in the beginning of this article, combated by prophylactic medicine. Constitutional taints of disease may be altogether eradicated by the recognition of certain elementary rules of health.” Dr. Morrissey’s paper is well worth reading.. Two Lives Saved. A statistician has learned that the annual aggregate of the circulation of the papers of the world is estimated to be 12,000,000,000 copies To grasp the idea of this magnitude we may state that it would cover no fewer than 10,450 square miles of surface; that it is print ed on 781,250 tons of paper, and further, that if the number (12,- 000,000,000} represented, instead of copies, seconds, it would take over 333 years for them to elapse. In lieu of this arrangement, we might press and pile them verti cally upward to gradually reach our highest mountains. Top ping all these, and even the highest Alps, the pile would reach the magnificent altitude of 490, or in round numbers, 500 miles. Calculating that the average man spends five min utes reading his paper in the aay, (this is a very low esti mate,) we find that the people of the world altogether annual ly occupy time equivalent to 100,000 years reading the pa K in—Review of Reviews for ecember.
