N«p«l*0'i't AUampttd Suicide. In (h4 memoirs of Baron Thiebanlt, recently published by Messrs. Smitb & Elder, ap pear some circumstantial de tails of an attempt at suicide made by Napoleon during the Hundred Days. The witness is one Gassicourt—a reputed son of Lonis XV., who, under the name of (Jadet, bad estab lished a “pharmacy” in Paris. On Napoleon’s return from El ba, in the first days of June, he was sent for to the Emperor’s study After a few words as to the serious position of things, and the chance of a revesse which must not be svrvived or a captivity which could not be endured, he received, under the injunction of strict secrecy, or ders to prepare with his own hands a dose of infallible poison put into the smallest possible compass. In order that it should be perfectly concealed and constantly within reach, he was. to place it in a locket that could not be opened except by one who knew the trick of it. Napoleon’s determination was not shaken and the order was therefore executed; and shortly before Napoleon’s departure for Waterloo Gassicourt placed the locket containing the terrible E oison into Napoleon’s own ands. In the night of the 21st of June, fresh orders summon ed him in all haste to the Elysee. Napoleon had just swallowed the poison, but new ideas hav ing changed his determination, he called upon Gassicourt to prevent its action. Terrified as he was, bis - hair standing on end, in a cold sweat, the lattet, nevertheless, did all that was humanly possible. Though Napoleon lived for some years afterward, when Gassicourt learned that the Emperor’s death resulted from the lesion of the stomach, the former declared to Thiebault that some particles of the poi son could not have been ex tracted, and that thenceforward sooner or later, death was in evitable.—£x. BURNED TO DEATH. Thre* Women, Aged Respectively 90, 83 and 86 Years. By Southern Associated Press. Nkwport, E. I., Dec. 19.— About 10.30 tonight Eliza Ann. Martha and Charlotte Wilbour, aged respectively 90, 83 and 86 years, were burned to death in their home on Spring street. After the firemen had ex tinguished the flames and re moved the bodies from the house a servant girl was found asleep in the attic, not serious ty affected by the smoke. The oldei sister was an invalid and the younger one was appare ly bathing her with alcohol, which was in some way ignited and set her clothing on tire. One of them rushed into anoth- room where the third sister was abed and set the bed on fire. Passersby saw the smoke and gave the alarm. The doors were burst open but when the firemen reached the bodies they were lifeless. The sisters were daughters of Norton Wilbour, who was years ago, one of New port’s most prominent traders and they were all that were left of the family. The earliest American coin age was ordered by the Virgin ia colony in 1112 and the sub stance used was tobacco. In 1645, however, copper money was substited. Seven years later, in May, 1652, the general court of Massachusetts passed a law creating a mint in Boston. This Boston ipint was the one which produced the famous “oak tree” and “pine tree shil lings’ which are highly valued by collectors of old coins and which have sold as high as $25 each This early mint continu ed in operation for thirty four years. During the reign of William and Mary copper coins wece struck at this mint for the Carolinas, as well as for New England in general.
