Hall! to the Babe to be born— The hild of Hope and Despair! Hope for the new, despair for the lorn!— Mail/ to the glad New Year! 1* KG RAM DaROAN. Growth of the United States. Statistics recently collected by a well known trade journal exhibit in a very striking way the paralel growth of the United States and the leading countries of Europe in trade and population. Impresed by the magnitude of our own growth, we believed for a time that it was unique. But this theory is no longer tenable. Although this country has grown f^ter than any one of the eight leading countries of Europe, nearly all show great increase both in wealth and pop ulation. Taking the United States, Great Britain, France, Ger many, Austria Huugary, Italy, The Salem County fight is to be carried to the Legislature and the at tempt will be made to induce that body to create the county which was defeated at the ballot box. We do not condemn the advocates of Salem for fighting for their cause, they have the right to do eo, and pluck and per sistence are admirable qualities. We would like to know in what capacity Mr. H. Cowper at ton will act in the Legislature when the Salem question is under consideration; whether as a judge of the merits of the case in his representative ns uvclty, or as an ad vocate of the new county interests in his capacity as an attorney for the Salem County Committee. It would be interesting, also, to know exactly where Assistant Attorney General Townsend would be at in case a legal question involving Salem- County shonld be raised and snbmitted to him an Assistant A'torney Gereral. Would h - be Assisiant General or the paid attoruey of the Salem''ounty Committee.—Sumter Watchman <6 Southron. Condensed Testim ny. This represents for us almost exactly 100 per cent of growth, and it is the highest per centage in the group, although Bussia, with a lower percent age, shows a growth of 36,000, 000. Qermany increased over a j Chicago, always keeps it at twe years standing, caused by La Grippe, by Dr. King’s New Discovery. B. F. Merrill. Bald- winsville. Mass., says that he has used and recommended it and never knew it to fail and would rather have it than any doctor, because it always cures. Mrs. Hemming, 222 E 25th St., third, Austria tiuugary over a fourth, Italy a fifth, Gr at Britian not quite a fourth, while France remained ^Imost stati onary. The percentage increse for the entire group is 521 for popula tion, and 222 for trade in the last four decades. Our own trade increase in that time is well above the average, being from $513,000,000 to over $1,600.* 000. or more than 200 per cent. Russia surpassed this percen tage, but anil remained behind us in the total volume bf trade. Germany’s percentage of trade increase more than doubled that of England’s. It is hard to overstimate the significance of such figures. They show a growth both in population and wealth that is without precedent in history. Christmas Ladies' Homs Journal. The Christmas Ladies Home Jour nal far surpasses in general excel lence and attractiveness any previous is»ue of that magazine. Its delicate- toned cover most artistically symbo lizes Christmas, and the sentiment aud spirit of the holiday season are reflected in its pages. An appro priate opening is a characterization of 'Scrooge,” from Dickens’ “Christ mas Carol,” the first of Charles Dana Gibson's series of sketches of tne great novelist's best-known charac ters. Net less interesting, and re vealing the humor and pathos of the Christmas of the children of the very poor, is a page of H. F. Woolfs waifs. In sharp and bright contrast is an ar ticle by Lady Jeune, telling “What Christmas Means to Queen Victoria,', and a feature of romantic interest Is a delightfully illustrated article on the Creolee of New Orleans, by Ruth McKuery Stuart Quite as intersst- ing is “The Garden Party of an Em press,” an American woman’s descrip tion of a great social tunctidn given annually by the Empress of Japan. To (he Christmas Journal Rosa Bon- h?ur contributes “The Story of Ify Life,” and special drawing* and pbo tographr, telling of her work as an an ibt, her successes and of her daily life. Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher, in tlie second of the "Great Personal Events” papers, recalls “When Mr. Beecher Sold Slaves in Plymouth Pul pit," the excitement Incident to those remarkable slave auctions and their aide-reaching effect being graphical ly detailed. The fiction is singularly inviting; the opening chapters of serial—“i'he Bmglar Who Moven Paradise,” by Herbert D. Ward -are given. The story is a tequei to Ellz abeth Stuart Phelps,’ “An Old Maid’i I’aradise,” and is in the saa e humor ous vein. Another romance—“Love at Valley Forge," by Sara King Wiley is a story of powerful dramatic inter est. Edward W Bok editorially poin.s the sure way to a happy Christmas by making others happy and condemns unnecessary economy in the outlay for music in the church. Ex-President Harrison’s theme is '‘The Judicial Department of the Government” and Rev. Charles H. I’arkliurst. D. D., writes of “The Young Man on the Fence.” Dwight L. Moody gives his second lesson to liis gieat Sunday school class, and "Droch” writes delightfully about books. There are, besides the usual departments, poems by James Whit- conjb Kiley, Frank L. Stanton and o'tiers, articler on Christmas gifts, Christinas dainties, Christmas enter- Lcuiueuts and festivals, and the home The current Jburtiaf Is exoep. tionally rich in illustrations and in teresting in every line.
