AS TOLD BY CORRESPONDET8.
CENTER HALL.
Sugar cane is looking well—
things will soon be sweet around
here. * .
Miss Carrie Hill, bt Una, is
on an eWended visit to Mrs. M.
J. Price.
Mr. M. B. Oandv lost his fa-
vorite old horse, Bill, last Sat
urday night.
The Center Hall Sunday
school is preparing to celebrate
Missionary day at that place.
We had a fine rain in this sec
tion last Wednesday and hope
it will improve the potato and
pea crop.
Mrs. T. H. Raso had a few
hogs to die a few days ago. It
is supposed to be cholera, but it
is hoped it will not spread.
The patrons of the Gandy
school have secured the ser
vices of Mr. T. W. Carmichael,
of Marion county. He will teach
a 9 months session at that place.
It seams that they mean to have
a good school.
Fanners are about through
picking cotton and most of them
are putting it on the market as
fast as they can get it into
bales and those that are hold
ing it would sell if the price
would advance a little.
Little Claud the four year
old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B
Gray, died last Wednesday
morning at 11 o’clock a. m. and
was buried at High Hill Creek
Church the following day. The
cause of its death was fever and
it was sick only a few days.
The bereaved family have the
sympathy of the whole commu
nity.
PHILADELPHIA.
Mr. L. M. Lawson, of Oats,
was visiting friends in this sec
tion last Sunday.
The weather throughout this
section continues very dry and
will cause a shortage in all fall
crops.
There have been several cases
of fever in our section, but so
far Dr. J. P. Parrott has suceed-
ed with all of them.
Mr, Sammie Truett and Miss
Sallie Gray visited the family
of Mr. John Siskron, of Rider
dale, last Saturday and Sunday
The cotton crop is about all
open and housed. Some of us
have been vainly looking for
substantial "go up” in the mar
ket.
We hear ever so much talk of
Id bugs, but there are other
ugs—war bugs—in this section
winch are playing havoc with
gardens.
The public school at this place
will open on the first Monday
in November with Miss Allice
Joy, of Newman Swamp, as
principal. 11
Master Simpson Stewart has
been suffering for seveal weeks
with white swelling in his right
leg; we are glad to report him
as improving at this time.
SWIFT CREEK.
More than three-fourths of the
cotton crop is already gathered.
We are very glad to say that
Mrs. J. H. Boseman and Mrs.
Lida Odom, who have been
very sick, are getting better
now.
The meeting at Swift Creek,
though very interesting, closed
without any addition to the
church. Where is the trouble
friends. Mr. Peel certainly did
some fine preaching and we will
always welcome him at Swift
Creek.
We have the chain gang in
this section now and they are
putting our roads in first-class
condition. We did not think
our road commissioner would so
ignore our rights as to let our
roads go much longer without
work.
Tour correspondent had the
pleasure of entertaining quite a
number of the young people of
this section on the evening of
the 19th inst. It would consume
too much time and space to give
the names of all present, but I
will say that there were about
sixty, twenty of whom were of
the fair sex. Swift Creek was
out in all her beauty and the
writer certainly feels compli
mented.
PALMETTO.
The farmers are about
gathering their pea-
he a neat and good sited one.
Mr. TMfinie Humphries has
been filling the plaice as ginner,
during the absence of Mr. J.
H. Humphries, on account of
sickness, but we were glad to
see him back at Jus post again
Tuesday.
JASPER.
Jasper boasts of a new store.
Mr. Gordon Wilkes is clerk
ing in the Dispensary at Dar
lington.
Miss Sadie Josey, of Una, has
been chosen to teach the King-
stree school.
Mr. George Hatchel is sport
ing a new buggy—guess that
means business.
Mr. G. D. Wilkes has opened
up a line of General Merchan
dise in upper Jasper.
Messrs. B. C. & J. H. Ste
phens, who are grading tobacco
near Darlington, passed around
Sunday.
Rev. R. E. Peele will begin i
protracted meeting at Lak
Swamp about the 2nd Sunday
in October.
DEATH OF CAPT. BOATWRIGHT.
An Honored Citisen of Ridge Springe
Pastes Away.
Capt James Boatwright, a
life-long and honored citizen of
the Ri4ge< passed into life dter-
tefnal at his lovely home on the
Rifiae, one mBe from Monetta
on Sunday morning last, Sept
13th.
Capt. Boatwright was best
liked where best known and
wore worthily the "grand old
name of gentleman.” To his
eleven children—seven sons
and four daugnters—he leaves
an heritage whose price is above
rubies, a spotless and untar
nished name.
His devotion tohis home and
family was beautiful and we
dare not lift the sacred veil bf
grief "which hangs over that
home.
His eldest son, J&s. Boat
wright Jr., livee in Macon, Ga.,
and is connected with the
Georgia railroad. Mrs. Wm.
B. Brunson of Darlington is his
eldest daughter.
Capt. Boatwright was by
both sides descended from the
oldest and best families* in
South Carolina. Capt. Mitch
ell Watson, of the American
Revolution, was his great-grai
father, and Capt. Boatwright
was a worthy grandson of his
Revolutionary ancestor. He
fought throughput the Confed
erate war, going out as a lieu
tenant and was promoted to
captain Hth Regiment 8. C.
Volunteers. His name is on re
cord in history for gallantly bn
the field of battle in Gen. Per
rin’s account of the battle of
Gettysburg.
He was sick only a few days
and was not cdhsidered danger
ously 111. On Sunday morning,
after a restless night, he turned
on his side "to sleep,” and in
that ‘sleep passed from earth
without a struggle. He was a
communicant of the Protestant
Episcopal church, an humble,
unostentatious Christian, trust
ing only in the atoning blood of
his Saviour.
After life’s fitful fever he
sleeps well, the seal of rest and
peace upon his face. Peace to
his ashes.
On Tuesday his remains were
carried to the Episcopal church
where the funeral ceremonies
were performed by Rev. W. B.
Gordon, and he was buried in
the Boatwright and Watson
cemetery. The pall bearers
were:R. B. Watson, M. N. Hol
stein, T. 8. Williams, Lewis
Youngblood, Alonzo Bates,
Frank Carwile, John Perry and
John Kennerly.
Quite a large crowd of sor
rowing friends and acquain-.
taaces attended the funeral to
pay the last tribute of respect
to their departed friend. All
the stores at Ridge Spring were
closed in honor of this much
loved and highly respected citi
zen.—Johnston Monitor.
