If one will read the resolu tioae passed by the county con vention last Monday, he will readily see that the Tillmanites of Darlington county are in fa vor of the South Carolina dele gation bolting at the Chicago convention, if free coinage of silver at the ratio of sixteen to one is not^put in the platform of the National Democracy, Mr, Ooker King, the assistant secre-k tary of the convention, was not altogether satisfied with the wording of the resolutions, but. was informed by Messrs. J. B. Floyd rfnd J. N. Parrott that they were all rights the latter remarking that they did not want to bolt, 'but wanted to make the other fello ws bolt. Mr. Patrdtt ■•might 1 just as wellhave saidthat the Tillman- ites were not going to bolt if By could secure free coinage at the Chicago convention, but otherwise they would bolt. The TiHmaaites of Darlington coun ty are already in Ben Tillman’s “breeches pocket,” and, if .the other counties in the State are in the same predicament, he will take the State delegation to Chicago with him in his “breeches pocket.” THE CHRONICLE ON LYNCHING. The Camden Chronicle con tained a short account last week of the lynching of a negro by the name of Tom Price which took place in Kershaw county a short time ago. The most re markable thing about, the ed itorial is that ilf contained not •A single word of denunciation of the deed. It must be admit ted, of course, that the negro had been guilty of two horrible crimes, but that does not excuse an editor from denouncing lynching. The principle is al together wrong and the news paper which does not protest against the taking of life by the mob, is not doing its duty in the community in which it is published. The editor of the Chronicle knows full well that, while white men are rarely ever hung for any crime in South Carolina, negroes are not treated the same way. There fore, when a negro commits two crimes similar to those commited by Price, he is certain to be hun 6 according to the forms of law and there is not the slightest excuse for lynch ing. Lynching is bad enough under any circumstances and should never be resorted to,’but, if it is to continue in South Carolina, it should be confined to the whites who so often escape the just punisment of the law. those who are now entitled to i jet registration tickets and fail to do so will not be ab le to ob tain them in future. It is a se rious thing for a man to disfran chise himself because he has a contempt t/or the registration law. No man can be hurt by obtaining a registration ticket, and, if he fails to get one now, he will doubtless rue the day. The "Darlington correspond ent of the Columbia Begiater of Sunday last says that the local papers said that no effort had been made to capture J. Newitt Kelly, who shot W. L. Smith. Ths News of last week said that Sheriff Scarborough had gone to arrest Kelly, &c. The corre spondent of the Begiater will please read The News next time and state facts. It is per fectly evident that he either in tended to misrepresnt or did not take the trouble to find out the truth. T! COUNT! NEWS. (.Continued from first page.) CLYDE (Continued.) Measles are very prevalent in this community. There are cases in almost every family. Mrs. Eliza Morrison, of Ches terfield county, has been spend ing a week among us waiting on the sick. Constable Clanton and anoth er constable made a raid at Mr. W. H. Hall’s last week and cap tured a five gallon k^of whis- key v Mr. A. J. Morrison is quite sick at this writing, but, under the treatment of Dr. T. E. Howie, of Hartsville, we hope soon to see him up again. Sheriff Scarborough and sev eral other gentlemen went one day last week to where an illicit uistillery had been operated in this section. Only the remains were to be found. Gen. R. N. Richbourg is said to be out for Adjutant and In* tqs, .General again. The piti'a&i £j$ibition which Gen. Richboprg made of himself dur lEg the last campaign ought to be sufficient to make his friends use all of their power of persua sion to prevent him from run ning for office again this year. The Willardites have estab lished a colony in Cherokee county, N. C. They are the fol lowers of Miss Francis E. Will ard and believe in a higher state of society than that which now-exists in the United States. They have bought 20,000 acres of land and will work 5,000 acres of it on the co-operative plan. Darlington should be taking some action toward having the county represented at Chicago next Fall. Darlington has ma ny attractions to offer to people in other parts of the country, and eo opportunity should be neglected that might bring them before the public. Busincit Locals. Holly and family have returned from a visit to felatives and friends in Cam den. This community was blessed with bountiful rains on Satur day night last, followed by cloudy weather, making as beautiful a season as heart could wish, for the growing crops and for transplanting to bacco. Marriage, like suicide, seems to be contagious. It is rumored that the “bells will soon again be ringing, while the little birds are all a singing; cupids darts are now pointed with gold, pierc ing the hearts of both young and old. The ball given by the young folks, at the corner store, on Friday night last, was largely attended and proved a grand success generally—there being present, so I am informed, about one hundred. Cheraw, Society Hill. Darlington, Centre Hall and Hartsville, were all well represented. The Society Hill string band, colored, fur nished appropriate music for the occasion. The merry danc ers "tripped the light fantastic” until the “wee sma’ hours.” All went “merry as a marriage bell”, with nothing occuring to near the pleasure of the evening and no hearts reported “break ing after the ball.” Mr. T. Moultrie Mordicai and Mr. J. E. Burke, of Charleston, have been spending a few days in Darlington on law business.
