an interesting sermon on Satur
day morning, after which an
excellent dinner was served on
the grounds by the good people
of the community.
When the roll was called Sat

on the circuit was found to be
represented, as follows: Phila

J. W. Warr represented the
churches at Sandy Grove and
New Chapel.
The reports from the different
churches showed that; since the
last quarterly conference was
held, $110.66 had been raised for
the support of the pastor.
The pastors, report showed
that the facilities for education-
al work on the charge were
gradua ly increasing; also that
there w ire five Supday Schools
on the circuit—those at Bethel,
Philadelphia and Bethlehem be
ing in a flourishing condition.
R. F. Howie, T. J. Drew and
J. 8. Hawkins were elected as
delegates to the District Con
ference, at Kingstree, which
will embrace the first Sunday
in May. The following alter
nates were elected: J. F. Gar
ner, H. M. M. Parrott, P. A.
King.
The Conference elected T. J.
Drew as superintendent of the
Sunday School which is to be
organised at the Hartsville M.
E. church on the first Sunday
in April.
A committee, consisting of
Dr. B. S. Lucas, W. 8. King and
R. F. Howie, was .appointed to
draft resolutions in honor of the
late Mr. Oliver Parrott.
The next Conference will be
held at Bethlehem.
On Sunday Presiding Elder
Hodges preached an edifying
sermon to a large congregation.
Many persons pronounced this
sermon as one of the best they
ever heard. /
The Norment Hand-Book.

We predict that in a few
years, “the Norment Hand-
Book” will be a household word
in South Carolina. When Mr.
J. Edward Norment, of Darling
ton, the gifted and busy special
correspondent of the News and
Courier, shall have written
sketches of a few more South
Carolina towns, then the whole
series will be gathered up and
published in book form. And it
will make far the best Hand-
Book of our State ever yet com
piled. M.\ Normeat’s latest
sketch—they call it “write-up”
now-a-days—is of Williamsburg
County and its old historical
. county-site, Kingstree. And
again does Mr. Norment come
up to the fullest measure of sue
cess—in practical details, in
word painting, in warmth of
coloring.
Next fall, when Edgefield’s
cotton mill shall have been com-
{ tleted and gone into operation,
et Edgefield invite Mr. Norment
to come and try his “fine Ital
ian hand” upon her—upon her
soil, her resources, her history.
By all means let Edgefield have
a pl&ce and a conspicious one,
in “The Norment Hand Book.’
Mr. Norment is young, hand
some, and supremely graceful
and gracious. He will not only
write us up beautifully, but he
will make us love him down to
the very ground.

nobler son. In the meantime
the Cheraw Reporter passes
into the bands of Mr. J. P. Gib
son, already the owner and
editor of its neighbor, the Marl
boro Advocate. Mr. Gibson
now conducts and publishes
both these papers.. In these
changes, we wish all these

NOTICE.
Y ORDER OF THE COUNTY
Board of Commissioners,
1 am instructed to say that un
der the plan for working the
roads the present year, all over
seers employed will be required
to open "all the roads the proper
width. All persons who con
template planting their crops in
the road will please not do so,
as it-will be quite unpleasant to
both_ the Commissioners and
overseers to destn j crops
so planted. The County Com
missioners cannot consistently,
and will not, approve the claims
of overseers for their services
as such until they have fully
complied with their contracts.
The main object of this notice is
to beg all persons planting by
the road to stake it off and, if
possible, run a furrow along
where the road properly belongs
and then plough and plant to
this line only, thus leaving the
road the proper width. We are
glad to note that quite a num
ber of persons have already done
this.
The hauling or throwing of
trash, litter or any, other ob
struction in the roadway is
strictly prohibited, under the
penalty of the law. Ditching
and clearing of ditches along
the roadside is approved of, ana
the dirt taken from such ditchee
may be thrown in the roadway,
provided it is leveled and putin
proper shape to improve the road
This must be done as soon as it
is put in the roadway.
The telephone line running
from Darlington to Florence has
put quite a number of its posts
iu the roadway—soma of them
being at least eight feet out.
The company or persons operat
ing said line will please remove
said posts out of the road at once
and [hereby save further trou
ble.
The County Board of Com
missioners has decided to work
the road this year in sections,
similar to plans worked bv rail
roads, making each Township
comprise eae section, and all
persons liable to road doty who

tax will be worked first, and
then a gang will be employed to
complete the' necessary work.
All persons who have not paid
their road tax-will be required
to work three days of eight
hours each during the year un
der the overseers above men-
