C., Feb. 27.-
>ontaiaing the
Bligh ft Rocker, dry
goods, Isaac Bulsbacher, jew
elry, the Banner Messenger,
newspaper, the Western Union
Telegraph Office, a barber shop
and some private apartments,
together with the Lake block,
containing the stores of Mrs. O
L. Morgan, millinery, the post-
o'Uce, Lake ft Co., drugs and
medicines, Charles Bultman’s
stores, the county dispensary,
hall of the Knights of Pythias,
offices of Drs. McLeod and Gee
and a photograph gallery, were
totally destroyed by fire early
this morning.
The Central Hotel, adjoining
the Ellis block, was damaged
slightly, and only superhuman
efforts saved it.
The fire is supposed to have
originated in a room in the up
per story of the Ellis block.
* * «'
The fire was first discovered
about 4 a. m., and it burned
with incredible rapidity.
Loss about $40,000; insurance
about $25,000
The
fire is
following story of the
riven in an extra edition
v - .
of the ^immonsville Enterprise:
Thursday morning the citi
zens of Florence were awakened
by the usual fire alarm. The
fire was the most disastrous
that has ever visited that pros
perous place, and swept several
of her fineet buildings. It is im
possible to give an exact account
of the losses, as some of the
owners of the buildings are out
of the city, and some canno*
even give an idea o». their stocks
The night clerk at the Central
Hotel says he was awake and
heard the fire alarm at 4.10 A
M. Mr. Hoffmeyer, who lives
just opposite to where the fire
originated, says he was awak-
ened by the alarm and looking
at his clock found it to be 4.20.
There seems to be a doubt as to
the origin of the fire. While
current report says it was the
j esult of a lamp explosion, there
are dark hints of a foul murder
and the work of the incendiary
afterwards to conceal the mur
derer’s dastardly deed. * * *
* * * The body was re
covered this morning about
9.30 o’clock and turned
over to undertaker Water. The
fire originated in the Ellis block
and spread with lightning rap
idity and in spite of the heroic
efforts of the fire department
and citizens burned until after
six o’clock before it could be
mastered. The water gave out
about five o’clock, but the en
gine at the artesian well was
put to work and soon had a
full supply on hand. Some of
the most prominent insurance
men are very ranch dissatisfied
with the water supply here and
say unless water works are es
tablished here their companies
will refuse to do further busi
ness in Florence.
As before said it is impossible
to give a full account of the
losses, &c , b <t as nearly as
we can learn they are as follows:
Sligh & Rucker, who carried
the largest and most complete
stack of dry goods, clothing and
millinery that have ever been
handled in Florence, having
three separate store rooms with
opened arches connecting them
into one large retail business,
had a stock of about $25,000 on
which they carried about $15,000
insurance. Only a few hun
dred dollars’ worth were saved
and it is badly damaged by fiie
and water.’ They have moved
into the Stackley. building op
posite Elliott’s stables and will
soon be ready to serve their
former patrons. Over their
building was the barber chop
of R C. Snipes, the contents
of which was a complete loss.
The Western Union Telegraph
Company’s city office was also
located over this establishment
and was completely destroyed
The stock of Muldrow &
Chase was badly damaged by
fire and water but it is irapos
ible to give a fair idea of their
loss which was fully covered
by insurance. They will con
tinue to do business in the same
building.
The Central Hotel was saved
only by the hardest efforts. Six
windows facing on the Ellis
block were burned and the walls
were badly damaged by water
The rafters were charred black
and at one time it was thought
that it would be impossible to
save it.’ The damage to the
building and furniture was
probably $4,000, covered by
insurance.
Mrs. O L. Morg an’s millinery
store was completely burned
fod nothing whatever was
saved. Loss about $1,800. In
surance $i,000.
& Son’s jewelry
stock estimat-
Sulzbacher

BftYQQ.
F. U. Lake ft Co., druggists,
had a large stock on hand,
which was almost completely
destroyed. Mr. Lake owned
the buildings occupied by F. U.
Lake ft Co., the postoffice, die
pensary and Bultman. 'His
total loss on buildings and stock
was about $15,000; insurance
$10,000. Postmaster McKenzie
saved all of the mail and the
damage to contents of the build
ing was slight.
The Banrier-Messenger, under
he mauagemeut ot Darr &
Brunson, was located over the
postoffice. These gentlemen
had a well equipped office,
which was completely destroy
•d by fire. Value $3,500; insur
ance $1,900. Darr & Brunson
tre energetic young men, and
will in a few weeks again have
their paper oefore the public.
On the third floor was the K
of P. hail, where all the secret
orders held their meetings. The
regalias of all the orders were
destroyed except those of the
Legion of Honor
On the second floor of the
drug store building were the
office of Dr. F. H. McLeod, den
tal parlor of Dr. H. E. Gee and
photograph gallery of Farrell &
Edwards. The losses of Drs.
McLeod and Gee were slight,
most of their instruments, etc
being saved, and fully covered
by insurance. Neither Farrell
nor Edwards could be found,
and their loss is not known.
Charles Bultman’s shoe store,
located on Dargan street, con
taining a stock of about $4,000,
was also wrecked. About
$2,000 worth was saved, and the
loss sustained is fully covered
by the $3,000 insurance carried
by Mr. Bultman.
The Dispensary also suffered.
Dispenser Williams says he had
a stock of about $1,400, only
$300 worth of which was saved.
Mr. Williams could not give
amount of insurance.
The total loss to buildings and
stock is variously estimated
from $50,000 to $100,000, and as
we have only estimates frjm
the various gentlemen interest
ed, it is really impossible to tell
the amount covered by insur
ance.
Several who have been losers
will not again enter business,
and this has been one of the
few fires which have really In
jured Florence.
The origin of the fire is
shrouded in mystery, and Chief
Turbeville has nothing to give
out to the public as yet.
The ueath of Mr. Williams
nas created a great deal of talk.
He was a young man about
twenty one years of age, and
until Wednesday was at work
on this paper. He left Timmons
ville Wednesday evening and
came to Florence. * * * * .
His home was in Darling
ton and his remains will be
carried there in the morning
for interment.
Since the above was written it
is learned that the fire did m'l
originate iu Berry’s rooms, bin
in the end of the Ellis Bioi-k,
near the Central Hotel, and
spread to Lake & Co.’s dru*
building. The body of M..
Williams was found near Mr.
iulzbacher’s safe, it having
fallen from Berry’s bedroom,
where he was last seen. Mr
Berry says he waked Williams
and tried to get him to jump
from the window, but could not
persuade him to do so.
Sulzbacher & Son’s safe was
opened at 5 15 p. m., and the
contents were found uninjured.
