A Pathetic.Story.
[Newt and Courier.]
There are three characters in
the City Hospital who are bereft
of reason, but who have a his
tory that is amusing and inter
esting. For ten years past they
have lived in the Hospital with
a pretty story surrounding their
quiet, harmless lives. One of
them is known as “General.”
He is an old white man, who is
supposed to have lost his rea
son during the war; another is
a good natured Swede, whose
name is not known, and the
other is a big negro named
Adam. They are used to work
around the Hospital, and for
their services are cared for and
protected. “General,” “Swede”
and Adam are very military in
their ideas. When work is
finished three wooden swords
are brought forth, and the Gen
eral drills his men in two com
panies, one composed of* ‘8 wede”
and the other of Adam. At the
close of the drill, dress parade is
held, and “General” dismisses
his command with a salute of
his sword The three soldier
lunatics are faithful, hard work
ing and attached to the Hospit
alldoctors and employees. Many
years ago, the story is told, the
General and his two companies
were sent to the Columbia Asy
lum, as the authorities at that
time thought that they were a
useless expense. The command
was packed off, each with his
wooden sword. The Columbia
authorities kept them for a
•while and then put them out in
the streets. When “General”
found himself and his command
thus cast out on the world he
drew his wooden sword and
wheeled his two companies in
single column, with swords at
a carry, and headed for Char
leston. How the trio succeeded
in reaching Charleston has
never been discovered, but one
day the squad, tired and hun
gry, but still holding the wood
en swords at a “carry,” march
ed into the Hospital and held
dress parade. They said no
thing, but when “General” dis
missed the parade he, Swede
and Adam went to rork doing
chores as if nothing had ever
happened. It was evident that
the trio wanted to stay, and
that nothing could keep them
away, so the Hospital authori
ties took them in again, and
have never since that time tried
to get rid of the three soldiers.
The wooden swords are still in
use, and dress parade is held
with military regularity every
day.
