^VALUABLE ADVERTISEMENT.
We desire to call particular
attention to the article entitled
“South Carolina’s Amazing
Progress,” from the New York
Mail and Exprest, which is
published in anothar column.
This admirably written review
of the business conditions exist
ing in this State is presented in
such a striking way as to chain
the attention even of those who
already know about them: with
how much greater force, then,
must it appeal to those who
have never before heard the
wonderful story of the State’s
onward march? The article
from The Mail and Express
will, in our judgemnt, prove
‘one of the best advertise-
ments South Carolina has ever
had. It bears upon it through
out the unmistakable ear marks
of the Editor-in-Chief of that
paper, a talented journalist of
New York City, who, (we won’t
say how many years ago,) grad
uated at Union College, Sche.
nectady, New York, at the head
of a large class, which contain
ed, among other distinguish
ing (?) features, no less
than eleven South Carolini-
ane, one of whom was the
present Editor of The Dar
lington News. With the death
of the late Col. F. Shepard (son-
in-law of William H. Vander
bilt) and the succession of the
distinguished gentleman above-
mentioned to his position as
Managing Editor of The Mail
and Express, we ventured the
prediction that, under the lat
ter’s control, and with the
knowledge of the South which
he had gathered in his earlier
days from his association with
Carolinians, that paper would
gradually modify the extreme
views it held in regard to this
section, and for which it had be
come famous. In this prediction
we have been more than justi
fled, and what TheMail and Ex
press man saw of South Caroli
na’s exhibit at Atlanta last
month has put the finishing
touch to the “change of heart”
which was so greatly to be de
sired in him. He who imagined
that nine out of every ten men
in the South met their death
with their “boots full of blood”
has returned to his Northern
fastness after his brief and cau
tious foray with a whole skin
and with considerably altered
views of the conditions existing
in this section, and of those that
exist in South Carolina in par
ticular. Read his "little piece: ’ ’
you will enjoy it.
QEN, GORDON IN DARLINGTON.
On the 27th inst., there will
' occur in Darlington an event
that will prove memorable in
its history. We refes to the ad
dress to be delivered then by
that distinguished soldier and
statesman, Qen. John B. Gor
don, of Georgia. Rarely in the
history of the country has an ad
dress on any subject met with
the enthusiasm with which bis
w»s received when it was de
livered in New York for the
first time some three years ago.
Since then it has been heard in
almost every city and town in
America, from the Lakes to the
Gulf, from ocean to ocean, and
always with increasing popular
ity and favor. It was our good
fortune to hear it in Spartan
burg in July 1894, at which time
we formed the resolution that
we would spare no efforts to in
duce Gen. Gordon to deliver it
in Darlington. After eighteen
months’ steady work on the
subject, we have at last succeed
ed. We cannot help feeling
proud of that success, believing
as we do that to hear Gen. Gor
dan on the subject of “The Last
days of the Confederacy” is a
part of the liberal education of
every Southern man and wo
man—not only because he re
presents, to our mind, the tiuest
and best type of the old-style
Southern orator, but because,
being “Gen. Lee’s right'hand
man” during the trying period
which he discusses, he is able to
throw light on a great many
important matters about which
even history is silent. Breath
ing the very spirit of eloquence
itself, humorous to the last de
gree, so that his audience is
kept nicely balanced all the time
betwixt smiles and tears, there
is not a dry passage in Gen.
Gordon’s address from begin
ning to end, and every man and
woman in Darlington ought to
hear him. We guarantee that
not one of them will go away
disappointed. And, ab>ve all,
every old soldier in the County
should hear him, if they wish to
enjoy the gratification of follow
ing again their distinguished
fellow-soldier through some of
the greatest compaigns of tho
late war.
If sufficient interest is mani
fested to warrant the trouble of
undertaking it, we will arrange
for General Gordon to kelft a
special reception for the Con
federate survivors of the Coun
ty at the Darlington Guards
Armory on the morning of the
27th.
