Why Was It
that Ayer'* Nnr-'i\p.irtlla, out of the great
number of similar preparations manufac
tured throughout the world, was the only
medicine of the kind admitted at the
World’s Fair, Chicago? And why was It
that, In spite of Hie united efforts of the
manufacturers of other preparallont, the
decision of the World's Fair Directors was
not reversed?
BECAUSE
Aeeordlng to Bulb is—“Artlolea
that are In any way dangerous or
oUenalre, also patent madictnee,
nostrums, and empirical prepara
tions, whose ingredients are eon'
oealed, will not be admitted to the
Kxpotltlon," aud, therefore—
Bream** Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is not a
patent medicine, not a nostrum, and not
a secret preparation.
Bream** Its proprietors had nothing to
conceal when queMtioued as to the for-
mtda from which It Is compounded.
Bream** it Is all that It is claimed to be
—a Compound Conceptratpd extract of
Sarsaparilla, and in every sense, worthy
the Indorsement of this most Important
committee, called together for passing
upon the manufactured products of the
entire world.

Mr. Norment’a Florence •• Write-Up", canvass! Then decide whether
Mr. J. E. Norment’s brilliant or y oi » WHn t to see the great-
article on Florence appeared in *how on earth Two per-
the Sews and Courier on Thurs- formances ilaily—afternoon at 2,
day of last week. It has been open one hour
common'e I upon generally in earl »« r -. Special excursion rates
terms of the highest praise, and | on lines of travel,
certainly does the distinguished 1
write!' much credit. Among
other things, Mr. Norment said:
“Florence is peculiarly a rail
road town, possessing the great
est possible advantages in this
respect. The magnificent At
lautic Coast Lino seems to have
Southern headquarters here,
thirty trains arriving daily at
this great central railroad point.
Of these fourteen are passenger
trains and sixteen are freight,
and very frequently extra pas
senger and freight trains have
to be put on to accommodate the
rush of travel and freight. The
unequalled run made from Jack
sonville to New York by the
Florida special on the Coast
Line last season, passed through
Florence on its whirling flight.
It has happened that I have rid
deu on many railroads, among
them being the Montreal Ex
press, via the New York Central
ami Hudson Itiver Hoad, on the
Pennsylvania Railroad also, and
several other famous flyers. In
every respect, speed, equipment
and general excellence, I have
never seen a road that surpass
ed the magnificent management
and superb equipment of the
Atlantic Coast Line. Another
thing that has always impress
ed me very much is the charac
ter, capacity and efficiency of
railroad officials. As a rule,
and I have seen them at all
times and under all circumstan
ces. they attend to their busi
ness better than any set of men
I have ever come in contact
with. 1 have seen conductors
at all hours of the day and night.
I have seen them sick and wor
ried. 1 have seen them plao d
under a variety of the most try
ing circumstances, but I have
yet to see where a single one
was not courteous, firm and
right in the discharge of his du
ties always and under all cir
cumstances. Their duties are
exacting and resp >nsible, and
they have my unbounded ad
miration for the admirable and
faithful discharge of their du
ties. And so it is with the en
gineers. If one does not think
it takes a cool, brave head, a
steady, unflinching nerve to
hold the steel reins on the iron
horse, as it rears and rushes
through the darkness, let him
ride on an engine on any dark
night. Let him see the life-like
movements of the engine, after
feeding it on flame and fire,
when its hot breath of smoke
and stream is hissing and burn
ing. tne throttle is drawn out
by the hand that never falters
and away it speeds wildly
through the darknass. An en
gine and its master alike have
iny greatest respect and adtnir
ation, and the South Carolina
contingent of railroad men are
the peers of any in the world
to day,”
"The Rumors of War".
[Columbia Register, Oct. 17.]
Considerable excitement was
caused in the city yesterday af
ternoon by a report that" the
Mayor of Darlington had been
murdered by a State Constable.
This report spread rapidly and
many thought that another Dar
lington war would follow. The
telephone in the lieyister office
rang nearly every five minutes,
but no definite information
couiil either be given or receiv-
ed.
A reporter was told on the
streets 'hat trouble was brew
ing in Darlington, and that the
Governor had bein called upon
to have the militia in readiness
at any moment. This, how-
e v e r, was entirely without
foundation, and was started by
the idle rumors that were afloat.
The Reg inter telegraphed to
Darlington for particulars and
received the special printed in
this column, telling of the sad
| death of Mr. McCullough, who
is well known throughout the
entire State.
As soon as this information
was received in the city, the
sensational rumors which h;»d
been afloat died out as quickly
as they had started.
