DARLINGTON VS. DANVILLE.
A strong impression seems to
prevail in certain quarters that
the farmerq can get more for
their tobacco by shipping it off
to the markets of Virginia and
North Carolina. We have said
nothing about the matter here
tofore, for the reason that we
were not possessed of sufficient
information concerning it to
enable us to reach a correct con
clusion as to the wisdom of this
policy. After a careful investi
gation of the subject, however,
we have come to the opinion
(honestly formed and candidly
expressed), that those who are
shipping their tobacco off to
have it sold are making a mis
take—a mistake which is a nat
ural one, however, and which it
will take time and experience
to correct. The farmer who
brings his tobacco to Darlington
on a certain day and gets ten
cents for it feels dissatisfied,
perhaps, because his neighbor,
whose tobacco was, to all ap
pearances, the same as his, got
fifteen by sending his to Dan.
ville. Two or three instances
of this kind passed from mouth i
to mouth throughout the Coun
ty, will gradually create the
temporary impression that Dan
ville is paying higher prices for
tobacco than Darlington, the
number of times when the re
verse experience is true, that’s,
when tobacco, apparently the
same, brought more in Darling
ton than in Danville, being lost
sight of entirely. Time only
can serve to remove this impres
sion, and t» prove beyond the
shadow of a doubt that the man
who got the higher price by
shipping to Danville got it be
cause his tobacco was really
belter, though it might not have
looked so to the inexperienced
eye. Time only can show that
the representations of the
swarm of “drummers” from
North Carolina and Virginia
who are covering the face of
the County like ants, and who
are buying from the farmers at
their homes by means of a
“house-to-house canvas,” are to
be taken “with a grain of salt,”
There can be no doubt that, ow
ing to a fortunate combination
of circumstances, Darlington
will, always prove one of
the highest priced markets in
the country. The following
comparison of figures will show
what a certain lot of tobacco
brought on the floor of Smoot &
McGill’s warehouse in Darling
ton, and what it brought a few
days afterwards when re soli
in Danville. The comparison is
doubly interesting in view of
the fact that the sales were act*
uol, bona fide ones in both in
stances, as may be seen by re
ferring to to the records on file
in Smoot & McGill’s office.
This is what they show:
Clsrsndon Tobacco.
[Manning Times ]
Mr. J. Manning Lee, of the
Fork section, sold in the Dar
lington tobacco market last
Thursday six hundred pounds
of tdbacco and received an aver
age of twenty-one cents per
pound, and Mr. K. D. Thomp
son, of the same section, on the
same day sold seven bunded and
twenty-five pounds and got an
average of twenty and three-
fourths cents per pound. Other
farmers of the Fork section sold
some of their tobacco in the
same market on the same day.
Ayer’s Hair Vigor, which has
outlived and superseded hund
reds of similar preparations, is
undoubtedly the most fashion
able as well as economical hair
dressing in the market. By its
use, the poorest head of hair
soon becomes luxuriant and
beautiful.
“No man,” said the red head
ed woman, sternly, “shall kiss
me ’ceptin’ he’s the stronger of
the two; and dear knows I’m
weaker’n a cat.”

Neglect of the hair often de

Before it is too late, apply Hall’s

We want every lady, man and child in
Darlington, town and county, to visit our
new store in the Hewitt Block, and see one
of the best managed stores in this section
of the State.
We commenced business in Darlington
just ten (10) months ago in one room. Our
business increased so fast that we were
compelled to get more space for our enor
mous stock. We are now in better shape
to sell goods than any house in this part of
South Carolina. Why lias our business
grown so fast? Simply because we sell at
“live and let live” prices.
