Those who were in the neigh
borhood of the depot on Satur
day evening last when the tra<n
arrived from Sumter over the
U. S. & N. road probably saw
the last passenger train that
this generation will ever behold
in Darlington. At the time that
the schedule which was done
away with on Sunday went into
effect, to wit, on May 80, 1805,
we had a few words to say con
ceroing it which we believe will
prove interesting reading to
some people at this juncture,
and we, therefore, reproduce it,
as follows:
Ths people of Dariiugton received
sows good n-ws this week. The only
passenger train which they ever see,
and which thev have been prevented
from using by reason of the fact
that it has been running up and
down the rood from Pregnalsto Haiu-
lel and return, connecting nowhere
with anything, has at last been made
to conform to a rational course of
conduct. Keginuing with Monday

m-, and Darlington at s 11 a ni., ar
ri • ing at Humter at 9.45, where it con
nects with the fast mail that goes up
every morning from < harleston to Col

This fast mail between the two cities
now leaves Coluaibia st 4.35 in the
afternoon on the return trip, reach
ing Sumter st 5 44. and connecting
there with the C. S. & N. traiu which
arrives here at 7. 30 p m. To say
that we are delighted with the change
would be expressing our feelings mild
ly. I' it simply an ideal schedule,
and could not be improved ui>on
How long will it lie allowed to staj
so? We sincerely hope for many a
day. 'Ve have not had much in the
past to cultivate in us the grace of
noiie. Our necessities seem to be
ao little legarded that, until the fine
schedule that was put into effect on
Monday was vouchmfed to us, it real
)y looked sometimes as if our ver>
existence were being overlooked b>
the “powers that he.” The schedule
on the < oa-1 Line has been changed
abont every other Monday morning,
and, until this one, each succeeding
change made it worse for Darlington

Perhaps, therefore, our animation ov
er our good fortune had better, for a
whi'e, at least, partake of the natu>e
of “ouspended animation,’’ And
while the good fortune lasts we can
be happy, forgetting, in comfortable
coaches attached to paasenge" trains,
he “jimerows" on the freight trains
in which the lif j is well nigh jolted
out of one; forgetting, if only for the
time being, ho-v we used to scramble
to get to Columbia in the morning by
the use of freight trains that ran only
three times a week, and how, if we
wished to return the same day, it
meant twelve hours travel on the can-
— six in the morning and sis in the
evening,—remeu tiering only that w»
can now take both breakfast and sup
per at home, and spend six hours In
the capital in the meantime; that we
can now leave Darlington a ter break
fast and be jn Greenville or Spartan
burg early in the afternoon Just

In view of recent develop
meats, it wa/. just as well that
we restrained our exuberance
in May lust when the only
change of schedule in the past
five years that has been a
change for the better as far as
Darlington is coucerned went
into effect. The blow we dread
ed and predicted has at last fal
len. The passenger trains on
the C. S. & N. road have been
taken off, and the only trains to
be run on that road hereafter
will be two freight trains, tech
nically known as •‘♦th class,
mixed,” one of which leaves
Sumter early every morning,
and slowly and painfully works
its way up to Hamlet uy night,
while the other manages to do
the same thing, in the same
time, beginning at Hamlet and
ending up at Sumter.
Alas, poor Darlington! Still,
it cannot be said of her, not
withstanding the absolute obli
teration of the C. S. A N. by the
Coast Line which has taken
place, and the transformation
of the former's ‘‘lightning ex
press” trains into the “4th
Class, Mixed's” which the latter
love so dearly to run into Dar
lington and out of it, that all
“her glory has departed”; for
will she not, at the momentous
hour of 1 p. m. every day, be
the meeting—point for these
“fast-fliers” between Sumter
and Hamlet? That is, she will
he when they are on time,
which, judging by the result
and permit this state of things j
to go on fiorn bad to worse for
ever? Cannot the Town Coun
cil or the Board of Trade bring
some influence to bear on the
Railroad Commission that will
induce them to investigate the
“bottling-up” of Darlingtoi by
the use of ‘‘fourth class” trains
for the accommodation of pas
sengers?
