Mr. Howard Nonnent has
been quite sick for a week, but
is out again.
Mr. S. Tombacher has gone to
New York to buy his fall and
winter stock.
Mr. Ira S. Burch will leave
to-morrow for Durham, N. C.,
on a visit to relatives.
Mr. A. B. Hutchinson is now
employed by Mr. N. L. Harrell
in his harness department.
Mr. J. C. Keys, the popular
cotton buyer, has returned to
Darlington, where be will be
stationed again this season.
Mr. H. H. Griffin will leave
on Monday for Nashville, Tenn..

Mr. E. J. Lide has been em
ployed by the Darlington Phos
phate Company to weigh cotton
seed at their oil mill thisseason.
Mr. James McCown, who has
been in the turpentine business
near Hazelhurst, Qa., for some
time past, is in town on a brief
visit to his many friends.
Mr. Hairston, the local repre
sentative of the American To
bacco Company, received a tele
gram on Saturday bearing the
sad intelligence of the death of
his father.
Capt. J. W. Woodham, Coun
ty Treasurer, had a severe fall
recently, which resulted in his
breaking his arm. He is out
again, however, and on the fair
road to recovery.
Mr. Eugene J. Wilson, now
in business at Wilmington, was
married in Columbia on the 4th.
inst. to Miss Lillie Milford, of
Abbeville, the Rev. Mr. Abney
performing the ceremony.
Mr. R. E. Hart left on Mon
day for Greenville to fill a posi
tion in the store of the Greenville
Clothing and Shoe Company,
one of the largest establishment
of the kind iu the State.

Misses May and Lena Schultz,
sisters of our new merchant,
have moved here to make Dar
lington their home in the future.
Mr. Schultz's father and the
rest of the family will arrive on
Saturday next.
Mr. Howard Edwards has
been appointed to the position
of manager of the paper
factory at Hartsville, and will
move to that town with his
family at an early day. Dar
lington will lose one of its very
best citizens in his removal.
In the case of Sarah C. Vann
vs Thomas E. Howie, for the
recovery of the possession of
real estate—tho premises occu
pied by the defendant—the Su
preme Court has affirmed the
judgment of the Circuit Court,
which found in favor of the
plaintiff, Mrs. Vann.
Mr. Jack Cobb, one of the
head men of the American To
bacco Company, and a “shining
light” in the tobacco world,
spent Saturday in Darlington,
and was taken in charge by
members of the Board of Trade
and others, who showed him
the courtesies to which he was
entitled in the proper style.
While Mr. B. F. Smoot and
his auctioneer, Mr. Drake, were
out driving recently, the horse
became frightened at a passing
train, and began kicking viol
ently, inflicting heavy blows
Upon both of the occupants of
the buggy. Mr. Smoot’s right
hand was painfully injured, but
he will be able to have the use
of it again in a few days.
Darlington is a veritable
“Mecca” just now for tobacco
men from North Carolina and
Virginia, who are arriving here
in shoals by almost every train
—some of them to locate per
manently, and some simply to
“spy out the land.” They all
express themselves as delighted
with the place, and with the
prospect it offers of becoming
one of the great tobacco mar
kets of the world.
* Messrs. J. C. White and Brock
Chapman, doing business under
the firm name of White & Chap
man, will move to Columbia in
a few days. This will be quite
a loss to Darlington, as this
business has been established
here for many years. Both Mr.
White and Mr. Chapman have
many friends here, who will re
gret to see them leave. The
families of both gentlemen will
accompany them.
