— ■ ' LOCALS. Mr. Oeo. W. Douglas has gone to Bennettsville on a visit to re latives Mr. A. M. Coker, of Society Hill, spent Sunday with rela tives in Darlington. Mr. W. W. Cooley has gone to his old home in Anderson County on a visit to relatives. Mr. W. J. Moorhead returned on Monday from a week’s visit to relatives in Anderson Coun ty. Mr. R. C. Andrews, of Oats, will clerk for Messrs. 8. A. Woods & Co. the coming sea son. Mr. W. C. Powell has resign ed his position at the store of Messrs. S. A. Woods & Co . and will return to his home in Che raw in a few davs. Sunday was one of the closest and most sultry days ever seen in Darlington. The breezes seemed to have deserted us, and complaint was universal. The Editor of Thk News has received an invitation to attend the State Firemen’s Tournament which is to be held at Florence on “Labor Day,” Monday, Sept. 2nd. Mr. E. C. Coker, the principal of the Graded Schools at this place, has returned from Mar tha’s Vineyard, Mass,, where he has been attending a sum mer school. Painting, remodelling and im provement seems the order of the day here now. Willcox & Co.’s drug store is the latest ad dition, and is receiving a hand some new dress for its front. Owing to the illness of his wife, the Rev. R. W. Lide did not go to Cheraw on Sunday last, as has been his custom for the past three months, but con ducted services at the Baptist Church at this place. . Mr. Walter Hutchinson, the well known driver of McCul lough & Cooley’* ’bus will be missed from his work for a while. He was riding a horse last Friday, when the animal stumbled and fell upon Mr. Hutchinson’s foot, hurting it right badly. Messrs. Charlie and Willie McLendon, of Cypress, two young gentlemen 18 and 15 years of age, respectively, havs sent us some beautiful sampled of to bacco cured by themselves. The samples are bright lemon wrap* pers, and the curing was ad mirably done. Tobacco curing is not easily done, and these young men deserve great credit as this is their first venture. A Quick Settlement. In our issue of Aug. 1, we had occasion to mention that Capt. Paul Whipple had some days before lost by fire a barn of tobacco, which, as was stated at the time, was insured in the North and South American Lloyds Insurance Company, which is represented here by Mr. J. Bart. White. The fire occurred on July 27, the proof of loss wai sent in two days af ter, and on Aug. 14 Mr. White received a check for the full amount of the loss. This is a remarkably quick insurance settlement, and should serve to show those who have insurance to place where to place it W* Arc Sorry to Lo«« Him. The Rev. R. W. Barnwell, who for some time past has had charge of the Episcopal Chapel here, has accepted a call that will necessitate his giving up this charge. He has accepted the assistant rectorship of Grace Church, Charleston, S. C., of which the Rev. Dr. C. C. Pinck ney is rector. Mr. Barnwell has made here more than the usual number of friends gener ally made under such circum stances and they will all regret his departure. He is well quali fied, in every respect, for the more important duties he will now assume and his mental gifts and the force of his strong and vigorous intellect will ach ieve even greater results in his larger field of labor. TKo Wonderful Girl Preacher. Claretta Nora Avery, the little colored girl preacher, left Mon day evening for Bennettsville, where she will conduct another meeting. She certainly is a lit tle prodigy, and it is mod re markable that a little child should be able to do what seems to be so easy and natural to her. Her sermons are preached with out notes, but she sticks to her texts and says what she has to say very much as an experienc ed speaker would. The church has oeen crowded at every ser vice, and at night and on Sun days every available space was occupied, and a large crowd was outside. Many white peo ple were present at each sermon, and all agree that the little girl is a wonder. Two “baptizings” have been held, and a large number of converts, probably about fiftv, have been added to the church membership. Bucklen't Arnica Salve. That any |ierbon, who, in any wanner, binder* or obitrueU the Health Officer of this Board, or any member of this Board, or any author ized Officer of the ’Iown acting under authority of the Board, in the inspec tion of premises within the Town lim its; or in the abatement of any nui sance, which, in the opinion of the Board, is deemed prejudicial to the public health; or in the discharge of any duties prescribed by the said Board of Health, for the correction and preservation of the sanitary con dition of the Town, shall be punished by a fine of not more than Fifty Dol lar*, or by Imprisonment not exceed ing thirty days for every such offense. Rule II. That any person who re fuses or uegieets to abate or remove any nuisance, or any matter, or any thing, which, in the opinion of the Board of Health, is likely to endan ger the public health, after having been directed to do so by the Health Officer, or any member of said Board of Health, sliall be punished by a fine of not less than Fifteen Dollars or by imprisonment not exceeding thirty days for evsry such offense; and in such event of said refusal and neglect It shall be the duty of the Health Of ficer to have removed or abated such nuisance; apd all expenses incurred by reason of such removal or abate ment shall be recovered, as is legally provided for, from the tenant or own er of the property on whicn said nui sance is found. Rule III. That any person who al lows a dead animal to remain on any premises within the corporate limits of the Town to him or her belonging, or by him or her controlled, fora long er tieriod than twenty four hours, ■hall be punished by a fine of not less than Five Dollars, or by imprison ment not exceeding thirty days. Rule IV. That on and after Deo. 31. prox., it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to keep any hog or hogs on any premises within the cor porate limits of the Town; and any person or persons so doing shall be unished by a fine of not less than ’eo Dollars, or by imprisonment not exceeding thirty days, or both, at the discretion of said Board of Health. Kale V- Section 1, That it shall be the duty of all physicians practic ing within the town to report to the Hecretary of the said Board of Health the names and residences of all per sons coming under their professional care who are afflicted with any conta gious or infectious disease; said re port to be made to the Secretary, eith er verbally or in writing, within two days after such disease is contracted. Section 2. Tha< it shall be the du ty of all physicians and mid-wives to report to the Secretary of this Board all births, together with sex and race, hapi>entng within the corporate lim its of the Town; said report to be de livered to the Secretary of the Hoard, either verbally Oi in writing, within two days after occurrence of such birth or births. Section 3. That it shall be the du ty of all physicians and undrtakers to report to the Secretary of this Hoard all deaths occurring within the oor porate limits of the Town, together with cause of death, name, residence, age and race of deceased; said report to be delivered, either verbally or in writing, within two days after such death or deaths. Section 4. Any physician, mid-wife or undertaker fa'iling to comply with the requirements of this Rule will be fined not less than Five Dollars or more than Fifty Dollars at the dis cretion of said Hoard. Rnle VI. That it shall be the duty of the Health Officer of this Board to visit and personally inspect all prem ises within the corporate limits of the Town; and any premises found to be in an unhealthy or unsanitary condi tion, the owner or tenant thereof will be punished by a fine of from One Doflar to Fifty Dollars, or imprison meat not exceeding thirty days, or both, at the discretion of said Board. RuleVII. That sny person who ob ■tracts in any way the drains, water courses or ditches of the Town, or who throws paper, rags, trash, gar bage or any otner refuse matter in the streets, or on the Public Square, or on or about either of the banks of Swift Creek, or who ordere it thrown in any of such places, shall be punish ed b> a fine of not less than One Dol lar or more than Ten Dollars, or by Imprisonment tor not less than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of said Board.
