in the Court House at twelve
o’clock yesterday, and deliver
ed Ids address on the subject of
the “Eight Box Law”, the
determination of the “dorn
inai.t element” to perpetuate
that law b y incorpjrat-
ing it, or something like it, in
their Constitution, and, at the
same time, to perpetuate them
selves in office thereby. On
such a live subject as this, treat
ed by a man of Col. Dargan’s
well known eloquence, it was
not surprising that in Darling
ton, the home of his boyhood,
he should have had been given
an attentive hearing by an in
telligent audience, particularly
after the way he was treated in
Edgefield; for while there are
few who are in thorough accord
with him, either here or any
where else in the State as far as
we know, there are fewer still,
among respectable, conserva
tive people, who approve of the
treatment he received at the
hands cf the Edgefield mob. So
it was that when the speaker
began yesterday he saw around
him within the bar of the Court
House a number of his friends,
many of whom, while they
could not agree with him, were
willing to accord him a respect
ful hearing. The body of the
building was tolerably well fill
ed, the audience being about
equally divided between the
races, and the white portion of
it being in the same way about
equally divided between the
two factions. Occasionally, on
glancing over the faces of the
audience, one cou'd see that
some particular view expressed
by the speaker was distasteful
to one or more of his hearers,
but such differences of opinion
as may have existed between
him and them were not out
wardly manifested in any more
pointed way. The audience
was extremely attentive
throughout, and they could not
help being. While Col. Dargan
is an eloquent man in more re
spects than one, his strong
points are his vigor of expfes
sion and the earnestness of his
delivery. It is worth noting,
in passing, that the speaker, to
prove his assertion that this
question was no mere local or
State matter, but that the eyes
of the whole civilized world
were turned upon it, said that
he had recently received letters
from men in England like the
Duke of Argyle and Justin Mc
Carthy urging him to keep up
the fight he was making.
Holding the belief in his sin-
cerety that we do, we regre".
that it is not in our power to
approve of Col. Dargan's course,
however much we may think
that, if he insists upon.it, he
should be given the opportunity
of expressing his views. Those
who don’t want to hear him are
at liberty to indulge the Qod-
given right of keeping them
selves aloof from him. While
his remarks were addressed ex
clusively to the white men in
his audience, and while there
was not a word spoken calculat
ed to arouse the passions of the
negroes, or to stir them up. we
cannot help feeling that it is a
pity, a t’ery great pity, that Coi.
Dargan should insist upon forc
ing this issue upon the people
at the time of such a crisis.
Men’s minds are inflamed by
political passion and prejudice;
they are quick to misjudge the
motives and actions of others.
While the world in which we
live may yet come to Col. Dar-
gan’s way of thinking, this is a
most unfortunate time for such
missionary work to be begun. 1
As has been seen, his earnest
appeals to the white men of the
Plate for a purification of the
balk>‘, no m itter how complicat
ed their political environment,
using the negro us a stick with
< which to break the other’s
back.
The Conservative Democrats
of the county, in convention as
sembled on Monday last, ap
pointed a committee to treat
with theReformersandendeavor
to obtain from them the conces
sion that the delegation to the
Constitutional Convention
equally divided between the;
factions. Their action is to be;
strongly commended They
have now placed themselves on
record as favoi ing any honor
able compromise that would
avoid the necessity of a bitter
factional fight, and if all else
fails, and that fight has to
come, the rasponsibility for it
will not rest with them.
