DARLINGTON'S OPPORTUNITY. As we had'occasion to remark briefly last week, the time has come for the business men of Darlington to take some steps looking to the promotion of the future welfare of the commun ity—to take advantage of the opportunity which, as it seems to us, is now in their very grasp. Every citizen of the community should be alive, at all times, to the advancement of its inter ests, but it is especially import ant, just at this time, that we should exert ourselves to the utmost, so that there may be accomplished by co-operation a work which will redound to the benefit of us all. There is no town of any im portance, either in eastern South Carolina' or in eastern North Carolina, within a radius of eighty miles of Darlington. It would be difficult to find any where else, even in the South ern States, as large an area as this with no prominent city in it. From a geographical point of view, the Pee Dee section of South Carolina is entitled to at least one city, and there is no place we know of that is so ad vantageously situated for it as Darlington. To make it what it should be, all that is needed is unity of action on the part of our business men, the judicious expenditure of^monoy, and determination to succeed. The tobacco interest has given us new life and new spirit, and if we will go to work now. and will let conservatism, wisdom and energy direct out action, impracticable, and that if it neglect of other crops will in were cultivated there were no | the long run be bad for the markets in South Carolina for State, it. Q„ Star.! article of itscorrespondentshow- ing that the county of Darling ton raised last year a million pounds of leaf, which brought into the county $120,000, while the prediction is made that the crop of this year will amount to five million pounds, as the ave rage will be increased J500 to 000 per cent. A little practical demonstra tion is often the most effective answer to those who have set ideas as to what can and cannot be done. The writer of this has had some experience in con tending with objections as to the cultivation of both tobacco and grass in certain sections of this State, and has since seen as tine grass as ever grew grow ing in sections where twenty years ago he was told it could not be grown, and within the same time he has seen tobacco culture successfully introduced and extensively cultivated from the seashore to the crests of the Blue Kidge. Iwenty years ago not one farmer in a hundred could have been persuaded that the growing of tobacco could be successful, or if successful, profitable outside of the few border counties, which^had the reputation of being the tobacco growers, until a few indepen dent experimenters blazed the way and demonstrated that it could be. Now it is the most profitable crop in many coun ties where its cultivation was not thought of then, and there are fine tobacco markets where a pound of the leaf ten or even five years ago was not seen. It will not be many years be fore some of the towns where these markets are now located will become tobacco-manufactu ring towns because this will be the logical result of the perma nent cultivation of the leaf. This every tobacco growing commu nity should aim at, tojhave its factories which will make a steady home demand for the crops grown and make the grow ers independent of outside bid ders, who can easily combine and control prices if thereJbe no home competition, by men in terested in making the tobacco brought to their market bring a lair price. In this the people of Darling ton, 8. C., have shown tfceir good sense by the encourage ment of a smoking tobacco fac tory, which the News ami Cour ier says is to be established there by two experienced men from Durham, in this State. If they would call BuckBlackwell there, who built up the tobacco indus try in Durham and gave the town and its tobacco a world wide reputation, back him with some money (for he is poor now though not many years ago the OJKPf»7 of a h e would make Darlington boom. The area of the cultivation of tobacco is steadily expanding in in the Southern States, and it will before many years become a permanent industry in states where it is now simply in the experimental stage, if thought of at all. In point of profit where the soil is adapted to it, and there is any market for it, there is no comparison between it and cot ton at the ruling price of the past several years, or even at considerable higher prices. But there are two sides to this ques tion, for tobacco culture may be engaged in to excess and run into the ground as the cultiva of cotton has been. It should not be made the sole crop any more then cotton, and the man who does that, al though he may make money for a time, will in the long run come to grief, as the all cotton victim has. The culture should be pursued with judgment and care, and the tobacco crop should not engross attention to the neglect of the food stuffs for man and beast that ought to be planted on every farm. Tobacco is a great exhauster of land. It is a land destroyer, a ghastly proof of which might be seen years ago, and is still visible in some sections of Virginia and North Carolina, in the thous ands of acres of “old field” which were “worn out” in the cultivation of tobacco and then abandoned as worthless. The people who permit them • selves to be carried away by the all-tobacco idea so far as to negleofl other cropj by which procure a botttle, and give this remedy a fair trial.
