Wealth in the Weed. [The State ] Charleston, Jan. 25.—The Newt and Courier will publish to-morrow a special tobacco edi tion, showing the marvelous de velopment of the tobacco grow ing industry in the Pee Dee sec tion of South Carolina in the last few years. The fullest de tails are given as to the methods of cultivation, the varieties of seed best adapted to the soil, the-cost of production and the profits on the crop, and the ex perience of a large number of tobacco planters is related to show that tobacco is king. To bacco growing is a flourishing industry throughout the Pee Dee section of the State, but it has had its most successful and satisfactory developments in Darlington county, to which the News and Courier's review it largely confined. Ten years ago not one pound of tobacco was grown in South Carolina for market. Last year, 1,000,000 pounds were raised and marketed in Darlington county alone. The acreage de voted to the cultivation of the plant was not 5 per cent, of the acreage devoted to cotton, yet the value of the tobacco product was 16 per cent, of all the cot ton raised in the county. The money value of the tobacco crop of the county was $120,000. The tobacco acreage will he in creased this year fully 600 per cent, and a total crop of at least 5,000,000 pounds is counted on. The average price paid for Dar lington tobacco last year was 12 cents a pound. Some especially fine leaf brought 70 cents a pound. Capt. Paul Whipple, a New England man and brother of the proprietors of * he Young’s Hotel in Boston, cleared more than $80 an acre on thirty acres planted in tobacco. O'her farm ers did as well, some of them did better, and all of them agree that there is more money in to hacco than in cotton. The Darlington soil is especial ly adapted to tobacco growing, some of the best resuits having been obtained from very poor land well fertilized. Labor is abundant and efficient. Two tobacco warehouses have been established in the connty pro viding a home market for the farmers. Twelve buyers were in the market last year; there will be twice as many next sea son. The average cost per acre for cultivating, curing and mar keting tobacco is $:(5. The aver age per acre is 1,200 pounds. A smoking tobacco factory has been establiened at Darlington The result of the tobacco grow iug experiment has been most profitable.
