THE CAMPAIGN MEETING. The State Executive Commit tee of the Democratic party met in Columbia last week and ar ranged for the coming cam paign, which is to be “short, sharp and decisive”, beginning at York on June 19, and ending at Abbeville on August 8. The date for the Darlington meeting is June 28. Mr. T. E. Early, the member from this county, ask ed the State Committee to ap point Lydia as the place for the public speaking instead of the Court House. They declined, however, to do so, stating that the settling of this matter came properly within the province of the County Executive Commit tee, to whom it would be left. Mr Early’s suggestion is an admirable one, for many rea sons, and we trust, in all since rity, that the County Executive Committee will take it under advisement at the earliest day practicable, with the result that they will adopt it. The people of the town of Darlington have passed through a period of trouble and excitement lately sufficient to last them for some time to come, and they would he only too glad to have the scene of the canvass in this county transferred from the Court House to Lydia. The fight is really none of theirs, after all, and the interest they take in the result is by no means sufficient to excite in them the spirit of self sacrifice which would necessarily be called forth by any effort on their part to secure the meeting for Darling ton. «// mean* let it he held at Lydia. TAKING THE " PLEDGE.” “The Democratic State Execu tive Committee adopted a reso lution permitting any voter who would take the pledge to participate in the approaching Primary.” This is the nows that comes from Columbia. We had always thought that the necessity for the taking of a “pledge” was confined to the prohibitionists, until the Demo cratic party in South Carolina instituted this innovation in the campaign of two years ago. Many of those who took the “pledge” then broke it to vote for Weaver. But the State Ex- evutive Committee, knowing well the frailty of human na ture, now gives them another chance to renew and keep their promises, saying to them “Rip- Van-Winkle-like,” in regard to the one they have broken, “Be ing it’s you, we won't count this once!” ' ]y wrong. 0. We believe all forms of license of the sale of liquor as a beverage to be morally wrong and in violation of the highest purpose for which the Govern ment exists. 7. Wo believe the State should prohibit absolutely the sale of liquor as a beverage, and should provide for its sale only for medical, mechanical and sacra mental purposes, with such re gulations, provisions for en forcement and penalties for viol ation as may be expected to prove efficient. 8. We believe that to make prohibitory law effective any the Executive and other officers of the law should be in full sympathy therewith. The Jury Had A Jug Jacksonville, June 9.—A special totheTimes-Union, from Tampa, Fla., says: Judge Bar ron Phillips granted a new trial to-day toStevenson and McNeill, recently convicted of the mur- ler of Marshal Whitehurst. The principal grounds on which the new trial was granted were that the jury had a jug of whiskey in their room while deliberating, from which the} - took frequent Irinks. Tindal for Governor. (Columbia HeKister) Secretary of State Tindal will positively he a candidate for the gu(>ernutorial nomination. He has not yet written an official announcement in answer to the demand made on him by his friends to make the race, but he will be at the Rock Hill meeting on Monday and at Yorkville on Tuesday of next week. This information is on authority which cannot be doubted, and Mr. Tindal will appear at the places named as a candidate for Governor. Richbourg for Adjutant General. (Columbia Register.) The Salley Rifles, Capt. T. C Steedman, every man of whom is a Reformer except its com manding officer, have elected Brigadier-General R. N. Rich- borg an honorary member, re quested his picture to hang in their armory, and by a unani mous vote endorsed him as their choice for Adjutant and Inspec tor General of South Carolina. There ard eight women col onels in the German army. They draw their swords but sel dom, but they draw their sala ries with unfailing regularity.
