WADDY THOMPSON. Editor. Thorsday, Feb. 22,1894. THE PRESIDENT AND HILL. The country has watched with considerable interest the fight between the President and Sen ator Hill. It reminded one of the great contest between Pres ident Garfield and Conkhng. nearly fifteen years ago. The result, however, is different. Conkling lost, while Hill has to some extent carried his point. He succeeded in having the Senate reject two successive nominations for the Supreme Court. The vacancy was in the circuit which includes New York. The result is a disappointment to the country at large, for the people were with the President in this matter. Both of the re jected nominees, Hornblower and Peckham, were prominent lawyers of New York and were well suited for the positioh for which they were named. Hill’s objection to them restod on their opposition to himself and the machine methods that prevail in New York politics. But the very reason for HiH’$ antago nism commended the nominees to the honest people of the Uni ted States, who are beoom ing very tired of New York’s rotten politics. That Hill’ooutd influence the Senate sufficiently to secure the rejection of* the nominations does not speak well for that body. To settle the difficulty .the President finally sought a man in Louisiana for the position. His selection of Senator White, of that State, is an admirable one, if all that is said of him be true. We wish the President had pushed the fight with HU which the latter commenced for with the country backing the President so strongly we -do not believe that the Senate would have followed Hill fur ther in his petty spite. ’ The members of that body well know that the people are ready to stand by the President, in whom they have great confi dence, as against Hill whom they regard as a tricky politi cian. THE COUHTY HEWS. (Continued from 1st Page.) NETTLES’S MILL. Rev. F. M. Satterwhite is on a visit to Virginia. Among the congregation at New Providence on Sunday we noticed Mr. Henry Solomon, of Hartsvllle. Mr. H. J. Nettles has employ ed a new miller. Customers who will call on Saturday will find a polite, active gentleman fills the position. LAMAR. The public schools in this township have been closed. Work is m progress upon the foundation of the Lamar Bap tist Church. Mr. J. L. Smith, of Darling ton, was in town on Friday with some fine horses and mules. Miss Souline Willeford, of Charleston, is visiting her brother, Mr. R. F. Willeford of this place. Messrs Sheldon Reynolds, Thomas Reynolds and Peyton Mims left on Wednesday of last week for Clemson College. Rev. ‘ Mr. Gresham failed to fill HTs Appointment at this place last Sunuay on account of an attack of the grip. Two of Mr. W. V. Moore’s children are very sick with fever.' There seems to be, how ever, some improvement with them at this time. Fertilizers continue to roll in at this place by the several car loads at a time. As usual the farmers seem to think it pays better at this season of the year than in the fall. A boiler exploded on the Ger man war vessel, Brandenburg, at Kiel, Germany, on Thursday, and forty-one men were instant- killed and five others fatally wounded. Tommy—Huh! The report of the Sitaib dis pensary for the Quarter ending February 1, has been made pub lie. Dispenser TraxTer adhers to the peculiar system of book keeping which characterizec his first quarterly report and which received at the time so much criticism. As the'matter has been thoroughly aired, his figvres no longer fool anybody —not even the man who knows nothing whatever about: book keeping. According to Mr. Traxler the profits for the last quartet amount to $07,I3 ( J. In order to obtain these figures Ije counts among the assets th«? profits which will go to the State when the liquors now on hand ip the county dispensaries will be sold. In other words, he reckons profits he expects to make in the future as profits-made in the last quarter. If we place these future profits at one-third of the cost of the liquor, N a fair estimate, and deduct that amount from the adtets given by Mr. Traxler,-. which good bookkeeping requires should be done, we have, to represent the profits for the quarter, some |34,000 instead of The report shows an actual cash amount on hand of only $19,713.11. The State Supreme Court has decided that Trial Justices can not sentence prisoners to chain gangs. Willjam Nelson, colored, who murdered his wife in Barnwell county about two weeks ago was captured, on Sunday. At a meeting of the “reform ers” of Union county, held on Saturday, resolutions were adopted opposing an early State cqnvention. Luck Winthrop, colored, shot Abram Williams, also colored in Orangeburg last week. The wounded man will probably die Both were drunk on dispensary liquor. The will of Mrs. Henry P Glarke, who died recently in Columbia, was probated on Thursday. Her property is val ued at between $000,000 and 1700,000. A party of masked men killed a negro, named Gage Robertson in a cold-blooded manner, Lexington county, a few nights ago. He was shot down in his own door. i Last week, while a white man, named McNinch, w a crossing the Catawba River, in Chester county, with a drove of mules, he got beyond his depth and was drowned. . Thos. Calmes, white, who is charged with killing a man named Parris, in Spartanburg county in December, has been captured in Texas. He fled the State soon after the crime was committed. Gen. John B. Gordon, Georgia, the gallant Confeder ate general, has consented deliver his famous lecture on ‘.‘The Last Days of the Con federacy” in Columbia and Charleston. Weber, a professor in Trinity College, North Carolina, is a forger and * defaulter.
