It seems that the recent con ference in Washington, in which Governor Tillman and the “re form” Congressional delegation participated, did not patch up the split in the “reform” ranks as at first appeared. The con clusion reached at the confer ence was that there should be no “reform” convention to sug gest a State ticket, but that there should be a free-for all fight at the primary. This ar rangement, while regarded as a victory for the faction led by Senator Irby, would, it was thought, put an end to the seism and bring the factions togeth er. But such was not the case. The Alliance faction, so called to distinguish it from the Irby faction, has developed far more strength than it was thought to have. Its leaders will not abide by the decision of the confer ence, but declare that a March convention will be hold anyhow. And, indeed it does looks so, for already six county alliances, Darlington among them, have called for such a convention. In this faction we find Congress men Shell and McLaurin and Comptroller General Ellerbe the principal leaders, while it is rumored that several other prom inent State officials are in league with them. This is prob ably the State House ring that Senator Irby referred to so feel ingly in a recent open letter. The Columbia Register and the Cotton Plant are supporting the Alliance people. In the other faction we find as leaders Sen ator Irby, Congressman Strait, Hon. John Gary Evans and Hon. Stanyame Wilson. In the matter of the Governor ship the Alliance faction seems t3 favor Comptroller General Ellerbe and the Irby faction is supporting John Gary Evans It is impossible to say yet where the many other prom inent “reformers” stand, but, whether or not the split will be come so wide during this cam paign as to cause the defeat of “reform” at the coming elec tion, it is apparent that the point has been reached where the ranks of the faithful begin to disintegrate. It only a ques tion of time when the scramble for office will scatter the “coat tail swingers” everywhere. In our opinion, however, the split will not become permanent this year. The time is not quite ripe for that. This is only the beginning and the “reform ers” will have to quarrel a good deal more before they get too angry to be bossed by Tillman. Of course there is no telling what changes may occur in a short time, everything in politics is so uncertain, but the Conser vatives should not count loo greatly on the much talked of split. Tillman says he is neu tral in this factional fight, but the truth is the Governor is too sharp to commit himself this early in the game. He is anx ious to go to the Senate and is seated on a high fence where he can see all around him, looking for the direction in which the wind will blow. At the proper time he will drop on the side that will prove to be the strong er and pull the weaker side over with him. There will then be harmony in the “reform” fold and all will follow the boss like sheep. A HIGH-HANDED PROCEEdIngT The action of the Governor in pardoning Constable Elliott, who was convicted of striking a v/oman in Charleston, cannot be too much condemned. It was high-handed abuse of au thority to say the least of it. Elliott had a fair trial at which he was represented by his at torney. Six witnesses testified that he struck Mrs. Nolle and there was nothing produced in evidence in contradiction of this save Elliott’s own denial. With out waiting to investigate the matter, the Governor, upon £te *ring of the convictipn, im- blinded by prejudice or else have lost their sense of man hood. The threat of the Gov ernor to remove the trial jus tice, who conducted the trial, shows that lie is ready to make slaves of the people by having only Courts that are subservient to his despotic will. It may be asked why did El liott search the Nolle establish ment? He found no liquor there. He did not have a war- rt nt and his only “information and belief” was a suggestion from a negro passing in the street that he had better search the place. Such is the effect of the spy system. STATE NEWS. and Gathered from Our Exchange* Put in Paragraph*. The State grog shops are mul tiplying very fast. The State authorities are not having much success in their cases against violators of the dispensary law. A boat was overturned in Charleston harbor, on Wednes day of last week, and six white men were drowned. A little white boy, named Tom Galmcn, about five years old, was burned to death in Yorkville on Saturday. The general merchandise store of John W. Ivey, at Tim- monsville. has been closed by the Sheriff under an attach ment. It is rumored that Secretary of State Tindal will be elected professor of agriculture at Clem- son, in place of Prof. Newman, resigned. The prohibitionists of the vil lage of Elloree, Orangeburg county, are fortunate. They have a State bar in their midst and two others within fifteen miles. Mr. Z. T. Eaddy was held up while riding through the coun try near Kingstree, Williams burg county, one night of last week, by three masked men and robbed of $1,400. It is said that on account of the discriminating rates put up on dispensary liquor by the rail road commission, the Richmond and Danville Railroad has re fused to haul any more of the State “poison.” Charleston came near having a riot last week, growing out of raids by dispensary constables. One of them, Elliott by name, was charged with striking a woman, Mrs. Nolle, while searching her husband’s prem ises. Excitement ran so high v at the constables had to be se creted from the angry crowd. Elliott was tried by Trial Jus- tice Burnet, convicted and sen tenced to thirty days in jail or to pay $60 fine. Governor Till man immediately pardoned him and threatened to discharge the trial justice. He also says that if Charleston does not do better he wi/1 put the city under mar tial law. Fresh crackers on hand at all times. Coggeshall & Co, the buffalo and point his pistol at him, but quick as lightning the messenger jumped on the buffalo’s back and held the rob ber until assistance came, when he was made prisoner. Despite the Governor’s deter mined stand the Corbett-Mitch ell prize fight came off at Jack sonville, Fla., on Thursday, be cause the court declared that such fighting was not illegal. By a patent granted to Mr. Geo. Lamoin of Pawtucket, R. I., for a wearing plate for gin ribs a vast sum of money will be saved each year on cotton gins. The object of this inven tion is to provide each rib in a gin with a removable wearing plate, which can be readily re moved and renewed when worn without the use of tools. It forms practically a part of the rib when in place and does not add to the cost of the rib. This invention enables one to renew the rib by simply inserting a wearing plate which only costs a few cents. Every gin owner knows the value of good ribs, as the gin cuts faster, cleans the seed nicer and makes a Jifijjtqr sample by reventing tEeseed and motes rom passing through the ribs as is the case when the latter are worn. The danger of fire in ginning is overcome as cot ton will not collect between the ribs. Mr. Lamoin has been in this county and laid his invention before the most practical men of the cor-munity, receiving a large number of or ders in this and other counties. He proposes to sell county rights to good uarties, already having his agents all over the South. Mr. T. M. Andrews, of Oats, S. C., has secured the right for Chesterfield, Darlington and Florence counties. All gin own ers in these counties would do well to write or call on him. They will save money by hav ing these ribs put in their gins. A good number of farmers in this section have given orders for the ribs, the Darlington Oil Mill also investing in them. The in vention has keen highly endorsed by Mr. M. S. All Over The Alonzo Thompson killed Mol- lie Mellow, at Chattanooga, last week, and then killed himself. Mrs. Thomas P. Akeridge, a prominent lady of Savannah, committed suicide in Macon on Friday. An asy lum was destroyed by fire at Boone, Iowa, last week, and eight lunatics were burned to death. Dynamite exploded in a train near San Antonia, Texas, last week, and two passengers were killed and six injured.
