THE BICYCLE TOURNAMENT. Programme of the Great Meet of Wheel' men in Darlington To-morrow. The tournament of the Dar lington Bicycle Club will take place at the race track of the Darlington Driving Association to-morrow, (Friday,) commenc ing at 3 o’clock. The meet pro mises to be one of the most no table events in the wheeling world of this State and several prominent ’cyclists have signifi ed their intention to be present and take part in the races. The track is one of the best in the State and, consequently, with a number of rapid riders, we may expect some first-class racing. The price of admission to the grounds has been placed at 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children under twelve years of age. There will be no entrance fee charged for the racers. The following is the programme of the day: First race—Two mile open: First prize, value $5.00; second prize, value $2.50. First quar ter, prize valued at $2; first naif, value $2.00; first mile, value $2.00. Second race—One-fourth mile, boys under fifteen years of age: First prize, value $2.00; second prize, value $1.00, Third race—One-fourth mile, Ladies: First prize, value $5.00. Fourth race—One mile open: First prize, value $5.00; second prize, value $2.50. Fifth race—One-half mile, slow, open: First prize, value $2.00. Sixth race—one mile open, boys under twenty years of age: First prize, value $2.50; second prize, value $1.00. Seventh race—one-half mile, Members of the Darlington Bi cycle Club over 30 years old: First prize, value $5.00; second prize, value $2.5(i. C.” “Mac.” In any race where there are but two entries, only the first prize will be awar Bennettsville township has 3844 and Cheraw township 3923. Al though Marlboro is considered such a fine county, Cheraw township has more than a hun dred more inhabitants than Ben nettsville township. Another thing which will strike people as forcibly as the above. Dar lington township has 4112 and Cheraw township 3923, while Darlington town has 2389 and Cheraw 970. The difference be tween the population of the two towns is accounted for as fol lows: Cheraw, some years ago, took in her limits and now the town does not extend over any where near as much territory as does her sister town. Did her limits extend as far as Dar lington’s her population would be about 2000, with the same number of enterprises as Dar lington and with the same ter ritory for the town. Cheraw would not have less than 4000 inhabitants, about 1700 more than Darlington. Thesearefacts and can not be controverted^ as much, perhaps, as some people might like to do it. Women'* Influence Over Men. I do not believe a man was ever re formed by scolding or sarcasm. Tears and repinings and complaints soon grow to be an old story to him. He cun find mor£ pleasure among his convivial com panions than he finds in such a home. Alas, that it should be so. Good women ought to study the art of pleasing more than they do. No woman can afford to fall back on her goodness to reform a man. It i a dangerons ex periment and one that rarely succeeds. The average man must bo entertained. A man who has been a hare drinker or opium victim cannot suddenly give up his vices without some stimulant to take their place for a time. IN THE BLOOM OF YOUTH. The Sad Death of Cadet J. Gillman Law at Hartsvilte. [News and Courier.] It will be sad to many in Charleston to learn of the death of Cadet Gillman Law. Sudden as it was unexpected, the news here shocked and grieved every one who knew him. Cadet Law was in the graduating class. But erne year more and he would have had the diploma honorably earned that every college boy looks forward to with so muen joyous anticipation. Cadet Law was a general fa vorite with the corps. Ho will indeed be sadly missed. He was one of the best orators of his class and was an active member of the Polytechnic Society. As a member his orations and de bates were a source of enjoy ment and instruction to all the members, and he was indefatig able in his zeal to improve and forward the interests of the old Polytechnic. He entered the Citadel ns a beneficiary from Darlington in 1890, and having passed all of the last July examinations hon orably he was in the senior class at the time of his death. Soma Interesting Figures about Dar lington, Cheraw and Bennettsville. [Cheraw Reporter.] Many people would not be lieve it, but, according to the census of 1890, Bennettsville has 978 and Cheraw 976 people.
