CONFUSION WORSE CONFOUNDED.
Does it occur to many how
complicated arc the political
conditions in South Carolina?
This thought has been brought
to us more especially by the re
cent statements concerning the
success of the Wage Workers’
League. There are alliances
and leagues, associations and
movements, and parties upon
parties, and all are of a polit
ical nature. There is confusion
worse confounded.
We have Democrats, Republi
cans and Third partyites, Till-
manites and Conservatives,
Ocalaites and Haskellites, Alii*
ancemen and Wage-Workers,
Prohibitionists, anti-Prohibi-
tionists and advocates of the
dispensary,old line Republicans
and reform Republicans, and
“goodness only knows’’ what
we shall have next. The voter,
poor man, is in a bad fix. With
so many parties, societies and
associations, all having con
tending views, he does not know
where he stands.
But the funny part is the
many and varied combinations
that appear among the voters.
A man may be a Tillmanite,
anti-Prohibitionist and a Third
partyite, or he may be a Till
manite, Prohibitionist a n d a
Democrat; again he may be a
Conservative, Prohibitionist and
anti-Haskellite or a Haskellite,
anti-Prohibitionist and anti-
Allianceman. There m a y be
all sorts of combinations and
our readers may carry them on
indefinitely. In the meantime
the poor voter is so twisted,
turned and confused by the
many parties and their creeds,
that often he does not know
politically what he is.

Gathered From Our Exchanges, and
Put In Paragraphs.
A Wilkinson, a white man, is
held in the Abbeville jail for
killing a negro woman.
An earthquake shock was
felt in Edgefield and Abbeville
counties on Friday morning.
A. G. Magrath, who was the
last war Governor of South
Carolina, died in Charleston on
Sunday in the eighty-first year
of his age.
W. F. Jennings, a colored
preacher, and until recently
principal of the colored public
schools at Laurens, has been
arrested for killing an infant.
Columbia, Spartanburg, Rock
Hill and Chester are in a hot
race for the girls’ State indus
trial college. Columbia dropped
out once but she has come into
the race again with a vim.
The advice of the council for
the liquor dealers association is
that the liquor dealers, in view
of the heavy penalty provided
for the violation of the law,
should all close their bars on
July 1, save one dealer who
should make the test and he
should be remunerated by the
association should his action
cause him to suffer.
The rival political factions in
South Carolina had a joint de
bate last week before the Post
master General in regard to the
distribution of federal patron
age. Senator Butler and ex-
Congressmen Hemphill and
Johnstone represented the
Conservatives and Senator
Irby and Congressmen Strait,
Latimer and Talbert represent
ed the Tillmanites. The Post*
master General has not yet made
his decision as to the claim of
the Tillmanite Congressmen to
Democracy.
The remains of Jefferson Da
vis will be removed to Rich
mond on May 30. Mr. Davis is
now buried in New Orleans.
The friends of Henry Delaney,
of Morganfield, Ky, did not
like the idea of his being made
to marry Miss Abbie Oliver at
that place last week, so they
attacked the bridal party on its
return home and killed the
youthful bride and severely
wounded her father.
