About twoo’clock on Tuesday
morning a large one story frame
building at the C. & D. depot
was destroyed by fire. The
building belonged to Mr. L. H.
Gilmore, of Mechanicsville
township, who used it several
years ago in his turpentine and
general merchandise business.
At the time of the fire the front
portion was used by Boykin
Wingate, colored, as a store and
Mr. T. E. Truett resided in the
rear part.
The fire originated in the store
and was discovered by Mr. P. Z.
Harllee who lives near by. Mr.
Truett’s family had a narrow
escape, for, when Mr. Harllee
discovered the fire and aroused
them, the entire front of the
building had fallen in. The
flames spread rapidly and did
not stop in their fury until the! large and representative contin-

The Sad Fate of a Young Man of Flor

On last Monday week, the TSth
hist, the youngest son of Mr.
W. It. Napier, an excellent gen
tleman of the Mars Bluff section
of Florence County, lost his life
in Pee Dee River near where
Capt. Ham Warley was drown
ed several years ago.
Young Napier was with a par
ty of lumbermen who were float
ing a couple of rafts of timber
down the river. The party was
on the front raft and were tow
ing the second one. Mr. Napier
was standing with his back in
the direction they were proceed
ing when the raft ran under the
over hanging boughs on the
edge of the river, one of which
struck him sweeping him into
the water between the rafts,
and instantly the rear raft pass
ed over him. As soon as possi
ble the hands began to chop the
raft apart, but when they suc
ceeded and found the body, life
was already extinct.

GATHERED TO HIS EATHERS.
An Old Resident of Slokes Bridge Town-
ship Passes Away.
Mr. John Edward Woodham
died at his home in Stokes
Bridge township on Wednesday
of last week. No man was
more generally known through
out the county, nor more highly
respected than Mr. Woodham.
He was born in this couity
about sixty years ago and spent
his long life here, making a host
of friends among our people.
He was an upright citizen and
enjoyed the good will of every
one. Mr. Woodham bore his
part, a most honorable part, in
the late war between the States,
having been a gallant member
of Capt. S. II. Wilds’ Company,
21st regiment S. C. V. For sev
eral years he had been in failing
health and was confined to his
bed for sometime before his
death.' He leaves a large fami
ly, his wife and ten children
surviving him. These with an
unusually large circle of friends
mourn his loss. Mr. Woodham’s
remains were interred in the
cemetery at Hebron Church on
Thursday, Rev. S. J Bethea,
conducting the funeral services?,
in the presence of a number of
relatives, friends and admirers.

A Correction.
In our recent account of the
levy by Sh 'riff Scarborough upon
cars of the C., S. & N. Railroad
for taxes due, the figures were
mixed. The original tax due
was $3,052,80 and the penalties
costs, etc., were $200,42, which
made the total amount due by
the railroad $3,253,22. Our
figures made the penalties, costs,
etc, amount to $421,22, which
was incorrect and all out of
proportion.
