A Lecture on the Subject by a Most Dis tinguished Member of the Order.- The Masons of Darlington have a treat in store At the in vitation of St. David’s Lodge, A. F. M., Rev. Henry R. Cole man has consented to deliver a lecture in the Masonic Hall in Darlington on Tuesday evening next, the 7 inst., at 7.30 o’clock. Mr. Coleman is a distinguished Mason, being Supreme Chancel lor of the Oriental Order of Pil grim Knights and Grand Chan cellor of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, besides having writ ten several important books on Masonry. The subject of his lecture will be “Free-Masonry in the Holy Land.” Mr. Coleman has just returned from a trip to the Holy Laud, where he studied the Masonry of the East, and he proposes in his lecture to give a resume of his researches into the history of this ancient order from a period of one thousand years before the birth of Christ. He comes to Darlington with the highest testimonials from prominent Masons. The lecture will, of course, not be opened to the public ; on ly Master Masons in good stand ing are invited, but to them a most cordial invitation is ex tended. The lecture will un doubtedly be interesiingand we think we may safely promise Mr. Coleman a large audience of Masons. No admission fee will be charged, nor will any collection be taken. It is probable that Mr. Cole man will organize in Darling ton a lodge of the Pilgrim Knights, a high orderof Mason ry which connects the Masonry of the East with the Masonry of the West—the union of the Orient and the Occident. A CARD. A Plea for Old Books for the Library of the Public Schools. Editor Darlington Xews: Few people have any idea how many unexpected oppor tunities occur, in school work, of using almost all kinds of old books that would generally be considered useless. All old magazines and literary weeklies, all good illustrated papers, old cast-aside readers, histories and parts of English classics would be most acceptable gifts to a school library. Even anti quated text books on arithmetic, grammar, etc., being interest ing from a historical view-point, would not be despised. Now we are not asking any body for what he wants himself; but there are, in many houses, moulding on too shelves and in lumber rooms, piles of old books and papers that the housekeep er would be glad to get rid of ; and it is these that we should like to get. The following is the change made in apportioningithe school fund : Section 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre sentatives of the State of South Carolina, now met and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, that Sec tion 1002 of the General Statutes of the State, relating to the ap portionment of the free public school fund, be, and the same is hereby, amended by striking out the word “average”after the words “in proportion to the” in the third line of said Section, so as to make said Section con form to the provisions of the Constitution of the State. So that said Section, when amend ed, shall read as follows : Section 1002. Mormon missionaries are com ing and Mormon doctrines are to be preached in our midst. Elder Richard Parker, of Vir ginia City, Utah, and Elder C. P. Margetts, of Salt Lake City Utah, were in Darlington this week making arrangements for preaching the Mormon doctrines to our people. They asked for and obtained permission from the Mayor to conduct public services. As yet they have de cided to hold but one service, on Monday next, at 2 P. M., in front of the Court House. They may, however, conduct further services at this place. PURGING THE PENSION ROLLS. A Democratic Onslaught Against Gov ernment Dead-Beats. Washington, Jan. 25.—The Democratic members of the House sub-committee on appro priations, in framing the annual pension appropriation bill for submission to the full committee, have made a vigorous onslaught on the dependent and disability pension act passed by the Re publican Congress in 1890. They have adopted a number of amendments changing that law. Following are the principal changes made : That no widow shall receive a pension under the act of 1890 unless she was married to a soldier prior to 1870 ; that no person shall re ceive a pension under the act of 1890 unless disabled in service from manual labor and in re ceipt of an income of less than $000 a year; and that no non resident of the United States shall receive a pension unless he was actually disabled in the service.
