Editor Florence Messenger: My only wish is that my ar rest in your town be made clear to all. I had made a statement to my friends, and when I saw in your paper of the Cth an ac- ! count that does me an injustice. Iwiite you, hoping that the publication of my letter would j straighten matters out, as you troyed wep- wrongly informed, no doubt, or it wouldn’t have ap peared in that way. I readily grant that mistakes are being made daily in arrest ing innocent people, and that it fell to my lot to be one does not annoy me ; but in this case there are several points to be consid ered that are not plain in your article. I am not six feet tall; my eyes are blue and my skin is not dark, so two out of thr e points that proved me to be an “exact counterpart of the de scription” fail The third, smooth shaved, I admit. As soon as I landed on the platform 1 handed my valise to the porter, and without touch ing or noticing anyone walked rapidly to the buss, and the nignt being cold, started at once to walk to the Central Hotel. I registered (my signature is always the same) and sat down near the stove to wait for my valise to come up. I spoke about a muider having been committed somewhere to the clerk, and while doing so noticed the chief. He was examining my signature. He then turned and asked me what I said about the murder, and I repeated it, adding that it was business for the policB to be careful in watch ing the trainft He asked me to step into a side room, which I did, thinking he wished to ques tion me about the murder. He at once asked my name, which I gave, and as he had just read it m the register he couldn’t have misunderstood me; also saying I bought cotton for Sprunt, and was bound to Harts ville, and furthermore chief must go “into print,’ which will lead only toexhaust- ing patience and bring the mat ter where the court can decide on it. I was willing to drop this mat ter, but if pushed shall certain ly test a decision of the court, as I believe that will end it for good. W. B. Stevens. Hartsville, S. C., Jan. 14, ’93. ee ■-tE IMMENSE Stock CO DESTROYED BY FIRE. The Loss of a General Merchandise Store Near the A. C. L. Depot. About half past three o’clock on Saturday moininga one story frame building near the A. C. L. depot, on.the corner of Rail road and Law Streets, was des- by fire. The building was new and was the property of Dr. J. S. Garner. It was oc cupied by Mr. G. T. Brown as a general merchandise store Only a few people—those who live in the immediate neighbor hood—knew of the fire until next morning, for it was very cold and the town was wrapped in the sleep of a winter night. There was a m m’er of houses close around the burnt building and the fact that they were not des troyed was due to the roofs be ing thickly covered with snow. What might have been a serious conflagration was thus prevent ed. The building destroyed cost about $500 and there was $400 insurance upon it. Mr. Brown had $700 insurance on his stock. He saved nothing and the insurance not cover his loss. 9 ^ OUR SUCCESS in the paRt ha8 induced u * f° r the present season to lay in a particularly attractive stock in the Dry Goods Department, con- s # c • sisting in part of Dress Goods, fancy and plain, to suit every taste, with Trimmings to match. ::::::::: Also an of Staple Dry Goods of which we make a specialty of giving low prices by the bolt. After I gave my name the chief said: “Your name is Shaw and I want you for murder. Where is your brother who got off with you?” also saying I might as well confess that I was Shaw. As I had already given my name and business, I saw that to keep on talking would lead to a knock-down and a dragout, so decided to say no thing more until abetter oppor tunity presented itself. A criticism of each member of the troupe would necessitate the invention of numerous adjectives, as every one knew and played his or her part to perfection. And there are indeed few comedy compa nies on the road that contain more talent, or beauty, than is found in the Darlington troupe. A Building Collapsed. The frame building of the Fortner Brewing Company, at the C. S. & N. Railroad, col lapsed on Thursday afternoon last. The heavy snow lodged on the roof caused the building to fall in. One of the sides gave he way, carrying the roof down the j with it. Mr. b. Kalmus, the j agent of the company, was at I give these details as in your work in the building at the time, article it is claimed that I could A beam struck him severely or would not give my name, across the shoulder, and he was therefore giving the chief good stunned for a short while, but reason for locking me up. , was not seriously hurt. The I did give my name before building has been repaired, to the guardhouse. That' going to the gu I should speak of the latest news to the hotel clerk is not strange, as nothing was known of anv murder having been committed, and that it should be considered a means of “bluffing” the chief is strange. 1 judge these details came in to the chiefs mind after leav ing me, as his demeanor had changed on his return and he listened to what I said and read the evidence that I had tried to show before, having my pocket- book in my hand with my pa- p ;rs therein. After the return to the hotel and evidence plain enough for a blind man was added to what I had already given, why was I not let go to my room as re quested and not told to take satisfaction “out of his skin” by the chief. Is such talk con sidered respectful? As it is stated I was treated with res- r set, why was it necessary that should sit up all night in the office? Is that consideration? Let me say here the chief went fast to sleep in his chair and I went outside and could have been a mile away before he awoke. Wouldn’t he have been more alert if my identity hadn’t been well proven? and why wait to get a dispatch from Mr. Sprunt? I had a letter, which I showed, addressed to me, in care of the firm at Wilming ton. 1 had hoped your article would Strength and Health.
