DEFORMING, NOT REFORMING.
The Injury Done Hhe South Carolina
College by the Present Admin
istration.
To the Editor of The State.
.Among the reforms which Gov
ernor Tillman in his Columbia
speech boasted of having effect
ed, was that of having "remod
elled this college here, dismiss-
ed those twenty-seven profes
sors who had no students.”
Before Tillman took the col
lege in hand to‘‘reform” it there
was a teaching force of about
twenty-seven ; of which, howev
er, five or six were only subor
dinate teachers. The number
of students at that time was
something over 200. That is,
there were about eight students
to one teacher The Reformer
is shocked at this proportion of
students to professors, and pro
ceeds to improve matters by cut
ting down the teaching force to
about one-half. (There are nwo
ten full professors and three as
sistant professors—thirteen in
all.) But what of the number
of students ? The last session
closed, 1 am credibly informed,
with about sixty students in at
tendance. The entire number
registered for the session will
hardly exceed 100. That is we
still have about seven or eight
students to one professor, and
we have accomplished a groat
reform ! But if it was a glor
ious reform to dismiss twenty-
seven professors for having
only 200 students, would it not
be an equally glorious one to
dismiss thirteen professors for
having only 100 students ? And
would it not be the creme of
Tillmantic reform to have only
one professor andeight students;
or, rather, to wipe the college
out of existence altogether ?
What has become of the 100
student that disappeared from
the college immediately on Till
man’s “remodelling” and "re
forming” it? They have not
been diverted to Clemson Col
lege, as Tillman and his crew
doubtless hoped they would be,
for that college is doing no
teaching. Where are they?
They have gone where they can
get what their own State col
lege would not give them. This
is deforming, not reforming, the
college. Observer.

EXAMPLES TO BE HEEDED.
How the Conservatives are "Up and
Doing" in Newberry and Laurens.
[Greenville News.]
If any two counties in the
State were thought to be utterly
hopeless for the conservatives.
Laurens and Newberry were.
Yet a few brave and determined
men in those counties have
gone to work, and they have
done wonders, making good
fighting ground where all ap
peared to be one way.
There is not a county in this
State which can not be carried
for Sheppard and Orr. When
men sit down and say there is
no use trying they simply let
themselves be frightened from
doing their duty to their State
and party by a little noise and
claiming by the other side or
make excuse for indolence of
which any man should be
ashamed.
We can win this fight. We
can put an end to all the trouble
now upon us or threatening
We can avoid another two years
of turmoil, confusion, doubt and
loss, of dangerous experiments,
rash and headlong mismanage
ment and tyianny. To secure
that result we must work for it
as we do for any other blessing
Let conservatives everywhere
begin to move. The time is
short and every man should be
at work. Even when there are
only two or three of them in a
neighborhood they should get
together and see what they can
do. They will often be aston
ished by the strength they will
develop.
Let all hands everywhere turn
to as the Laurens and Newberry
men and those in some other
counties have done and we will
sweep the State with a rush.

Haydock’s New Liver Pills.
A wondarful and extraordinary combination of cuncen*

whole gystem of the globe, and made mankind wiser and

markable discovery of l>r. Heyduck has eclipsed them
all, and has founded a
NEW MEDICAL SYSTEM.
The Doctors, whoso vast doses of four or five pills, en.
feeble the stomach and paralyze the bowels, must give
way to the man who restores health and appetite with

SUCCESS
We have just returned from New York with a stock that will
prove a thunderbolt and an eye-opener to the sore oppressed con
sumer of this county; we want your trade and believe we will
get it: for the simple reason we are going to give you more

town or another.
HERE IS THE SECRET:
We know when, where and how to buy and we know how to attend to our own business and
leave others’ alone; also, we underbuy and can undersell, and so for the future we will be in New
York a great part of our time and have an office there.
Two thousand years nave not developed a better method of learning the state of affairs than to
