SOME COTTON
Statistic* upon tha Acroaga and Pro
duction of Cotton In Thi* State
fonTen Year*.
The census bureau, at Wash
ington, has recently issued a
circular containing preliminary
statistics of cotton produced in
several States for the year end
ing May 31, 18!to.
In South Carolina the total
area devoted to the cultivation
of cotton in 1889-181)0 was 1,987.-
061 acres and the production of
cotton 746,798, as compared with
a cultivated area of 1,364,249
acres and a production of 622.-
548 bales in 1879-1880. There
was, therefore, an increase! of
623,402 acres, or 45.69 per cent,
in the area cultivated and of
224,250 bales, or 42.91 per cent,
in the number of bales produc
ed, the yield in 1879-1880 being
at the rate of 0.38 of a bale to
the acre, or 2.61 acres to the
bale, and in 1889-1890 at the
rate of 0.38 of a bale to the acre,
or 2.66 acres to the bale. Every
cotton-producing county in the
State, with the exception of
Charleston County, out of which
Berkeley County was formed in
1882, shows an increase in area
devoted to cotton, and all but
four show an increase in pro
duction. Barnwell County had
the largest acreage in cotton in
1889-1890 and Abbeville County
the largest production.
In Darlington county for the
period stated there were 69,353
acres planted upon which 25,204
bales were raised, being an in
crease in ten years of 8,929 in
the number of acres planted
and 1,258 in the number of
bales produced.
