'1' WALLACE HOUSE .INCIDENT, Col. «l.-Washington Watts, a Prominent Farmsr of Laurens, Gives an In teresting Incident of '76. Seeing some allusion to Col. Qrr’s leading the members of the Wallace House into the State House in 187G. I was reminded of another incident that occurr ed on the same day. We got in and were seated when the members of the Mack ey House came and the utmost confusion began. It seemed as if there would be a general tight. I had no arms to defend myself, so I went out and up to John C. Dial’s and procured a good pis tol and a handful of cartridges, and returned at once to the State House, hut when 1 pre sented myself at the door I was told that we could not get in, as the Laurens and Edgefield dele gations had been counted out. I felt that I was in a dilemma and turned off into the lobby, and found my friend and col league, D. Wade Anderson, sit ting on a box looking as forlorn as 1 felt. I took my seat by his side, but in a short time the portly form of that noble pa triot, James N. Lipscomb, de ceased, appeared near us, who at once took in the situation, and went back in the hall, and in a few minutes we were called to the doors, whore stood the above named, Col. A. C. Has kell, Col. James L.Orr and John D. Brown, sergeant-at-arms for the Wallace House. These brave men formed them selves into a hollow square, pushing back their opponents, and we passed through to our seats about as much relieved as prisoners turned out of jail. It looked as if this would precipi tate the fight, but the determin ed bearing of these men and the prudence of Speaker W al lace averted the storm. Who but inangrate could for get this scene and feel but grate ful to these brave men for their promptness in risking their lives to shield us? And this is but one of the many incidents that could be told of their unselfish risks for the good of their pros trate State, and the small hon or of Lieutenant Governor is very small|compensation for the services rendered them. One of those men has been abused beyond measure for party purposes. The other is nick named Shanghai, a feeble effort to defame a man who has not a blot on him ; his career has been above reproach. None of the traits of the Shanghai apply to him. I will suggest to his defamers who think he is a Shanghai to try his pluck and, my word for it, before they are done with him they will con clude that instead of a Shanghai they have struck a ten pound game cock with all the good traits of that noble fowl. You will find it hard to find a cleaner set of men than John C. Sheppard, James L. Orr and Joseph B. Humbert. I presume the balance of the Conservative ticket are just as good, but I don’t know the rest as I know these. Good men should ex amine into the moral as well as political standing of both tickets and see who will stand the test of motal integrity, for in this consists the great difference in the men—for they claim to be Democrats. J. Washington Watts. April 2d, ’92. PARTY BIRTHS and DEATS. A Warning to Those Who Think of Joining the Third Party.—All Such Parties are Short Lived. A Texas exchange has been looking up the history of Third f tarties for the education of its riends who have strayed away with the People’s party, so call ed. Here is the lists. 1. The Clinton Democracy, born 1812 and died the same year. 2. The anti-Masonic party, born 1826, and though such men as Seward, Filmore, Weed, Clay and Wirt were identified with it, its existence ceased in 1832. 3. The Liberty party, born in 1840, died in 1844. 4. The Free Soil or Abolition party, born in 1848, died in 1852. 5. The Southern States'Rights party, born in 1852, died the same year. 6. The American or Know’ Nothing party, born in 1856, died in 1860. 7. The Liberal Republican party, born in 1872, died the same year. 8. The Temperance party’s birth and death occurred in 1872. 9. The Labor Reform party came into and went out of exis tence in 1872. 10. The American National party was born in 1875 and died ta 1876. 11. The Greenback party was born in 1875 and died in 1880. 12. The Prohibition party, as a National party was born in 1876 and has been dying a slow death ever since. 13. The National party was bom in 1878 and died the same year. 14. The National Liberty party breathed its first and last breath in 1879. 15. The Greenback Labor par ty was born in 1882 and died so S uietly that the exact time of its emise is not known. Since 1882 probably a dozen different parties, all more or lees tinctured with communism, and socialism have flourished for short times. So it will be seen that the Democrats have danced at the of more than a score of Consumption Cured.
