[Greenville Enterpriae taineer. | At the meeting in field on Saturday last Governor Tillman made an at tack upon his opponent, ex-Gov- ernor Sheppard, of a personal nature, and among other things he declared that Sheppard knew “that in integrity, truth and virtue he is not my equal.” It is well known that Governor Tillman gave his ardent support to Sheppard in 1880, and under took to secure an endorsement of his candidacy for Governor by a caucus of the friends of the Farmers’ Movement, in which he was not successful be cause of his dictatorial manner and unfairness to other candi dates. He now undertakes to nullify the effect of his course in 1886, and makes a personal assault upon an honorable oppo nent, claiming superiority for himself in all that makes true manhood. It is well to recall the language used by Governor Tillman in a communication to the Greenville News a few weeks after the State conven tion in 1880, wherein ho endors ed the man whom he is now re viling. This is an extract from his letter, and relates exclusive ly to Gov. Sheppard: “He is a man of ability who has fiHed every position he has occupied with credit to himself and to the State. He pays his debts one hundred cents on the dollar, and there is no blot on his escutcheon that I ever beard of, and he had fallen heir to the office; so to speak. I have been accused of hypocrisy in voting for a lawyer after making such a blow about farmers’ rights, and the question is asked why I did not oppose him in our coun ty convention ? I had no ren- *on to oppose him. He was in accord with our views -, we had been playmates at school and friends ever since. He lived in Edgefield and was her son. What reason did I have to an ■ tagonize him? I had never clamored for a “new deal,” and I had asserted that the Fann ers’ Movement only aimed to secure our rights—not to ostra cise or impose on other class es.” This extract gives an unquali fied endorsement to Mr. Shep pard as a citizen and an official, and it was given at a time when there was nothing to gain or lose, as the nominations had already taken place, and he was speaking of a defeated candi date. No evidence of inferior ity in public or private virtue has been gathered since, and the only offence committed by Mr. Sheppard is that he has ac cepted a position as a candidate before the people in opposition to his former endorser. Ordi nary mortals usually think less of any man who opposes them for office, but one who lays claim to superior virtues ought to rise above the petty jealous ies of such contentions and at least prove consistent in regard to the characters and attain ments of others, whose lives are so well known to each other as in this instance. [Newberry Observer.] Senator Irby got on a high moral horse and instructed the bank of Laurens to sell his thousand dollars worth of bank stock which he hadn’t paid for, rather thanbeparticepscriminis in “exerting the last cent com mon decency will allow *out of the farmers on the loan of money.” In view of Senator Irby’s ac tion, the Laurens Advertiser suggests “a bank of benevolen ce,” to be established by some of the rich men who are living high off the taxes of the farm era and flourishing on big salar ies like a green bay tree, and whr not? There is Senator Irby himself, for instance, born to large pos sessions—a rich man—and now drawing a salary of $5,000 a year for six years; by the grace of the farmers. And there is Congressman Shell—not a poor man by any means—who, hav ing filled the lucrative office of Clerk of Court, by the grace of the farmers, for—ten years, isn’t it ?—is now drawing" a sa- of $5,000 a year, by the i of the same farmers. A prompt “yes” was sent. It is regarded by bank officers here as certain that the State could have secured all the money needed to meet the inter est. There was no unfriendli ness totheaduiinistration which would have prevented the banks from advancing all the money need to maintain the State’s credit. They are more than any other class of people inter ested in having South Carolina securities rated in the markets of the world as “gilt edged.” Was there any general appli cation to the banks for help for the State treasury ? If so, was there any general refusal to give that help ? If not, Governor Tillman has evidently had another lapse of memory and in his anxiety to make the people, believe that every man in South Carolina who has a few dollars is a pub lic enemy has misstated the facts. It will be remembered, how ever, that in this “mistake” as in others the governor made no mistake against himself. Drum mond Medicine Co., 48-50 Maid en Lane, New York. Agents wanted. A SACRED GRAVE. the Decision of A Court Respecting Grave of Mother Washington. The Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has decided that the lot on which is the grave of the mother of George Washington is not the subject of a sale. The allegations in the case are that an option had been given on the lot. The title of the case is Col bert & Kirtley against Shep herd. The records show that February 28, 1889, the defend ants, Shepherd, gave Kirtley & Colbert, a real estate firm of Fredericksburg, an option for the purchase of the lot, and the sum mentioned was $2,500, which was to include also the monument which had been con tributed by a New York man, but had never been completed. The real estate firm claim, and the records bear out their claim, that they found a purchaser for $20,000 in G. H. Huntington, of Baltimore. The property was advertised in various parts of the country, and attracted con siderable attention. The result was that the people of Freder icksburg held a massmeeting, at which resolutions disapprov ing the sale of the sacred spot were adopted. Mr. Shepherd re fused to accept the $2,500 and to make a deed for the lot. The result was a damage suit insti tuted by the real estate firm in the Circuit Court of Fredericks burg. The decision was against the plaintiffs. A Compass in Every Watch. [The Lutheran ] A few days ago I was stand ing by an American gentleman writes a London editor, when I expressed a wish to know which point was the north. He at once pulled out his watch, look ed at it, and pointed to the north. I asked him whether he had a compass attached to his watch. “All watches,” he replied, “arc compasses.” Then he explain ed to me how this was. Point the hour hand to the sun, and the south is exactly half way between the hour and the figure XII on the watch. For in stance, suppose it is 4 o’clock. Point the hand indicating 4 *to the sun, and II on the watch is exactly the south. Suppose that it is 8 o’clock ; point the hand indicating 8 to the sun, and the figure X on the watch is due south. My American friend was quite surprised that I did not know this. Thinking that very possibly I was ignorant of a thing that everyone else knew, and happening to meet Mr. Stanley, ! asked that eminent traveler if he was aware of this simple mode of discovering the points of the compass.
