BENEFACTRESS OF HER RACE. Noble Work of a Young Colored Wo* man Born a Slave. Washington, April 10.—The colored people of Prince Wil liam county, Va., have under taken to establish what is said to be the first industrial school in the land for colored youth under colored auspices. A pros pectus says: “The object is to give instruction in the ordinary English branches and tfie in dustrial arts to the colored peo ple living in a region of Virgin ia not yet recovered from the devastation of the late war.” The leading spiritin the move ment is Miss Jennie Dea , of Manassas, a young colored wo man, who has quite a remark able history. Miss Dean was born a slave, but has accom plished much, notwithstanding the disadvantages under which she negan life. She was grad uated from the public schools in this city, was converted, and then, going to the mountains of Virginia, began mission work among the colored people, pros ecuting her labors under great difficulties. She has four large Sunday schools in the moun tains, in connection with which she conducts sewing schools. She has raised money to build churches and chapels, and her success in the work has led the people of Manasses to call upon her to raise the money to build the industrial school. TA-RA-RA BOOM-DE-AY I The Song That It On the Lips of Every body In London and New York. [Pall Mall Gazette.] “Ta-ra-ra Boom-de a Ta- ra-ra Boom-de-ay! 1'a-ra-ra Boom-de-ay !” There is no es caping from it; it is as univer sally prevalent as an east wind in March. In every part of Lon don and at every hour of the day and night the words quoted and the air to which they have been wedded are an obvious and occasionally painful fact. Our early morning slumbers are bro ken by the milkman carolling the popular melody at our front garden gate. The newspaper boy whistles it on the door-step. The postman hums it -when he delivers our matutinal batch of letters. The tradesman’s mes senger brings it with the month ly book; it is heard in the rail way carriage, in the ’bus, and in the tram car. No nook or cranny in London is free from it; for wherever the biting east wind is there also will be heard “Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay!” A Reward of 8&00, Will be jiaid for any Case of Rheumatism which cannot be cured by Ur. Drummond’s Light ning Remedy. This offer is made in good faith by the pro prietors, and there is no reason able excuse for any one to suf fer longer. Any ordinary case will he cured by one bottle. In addition to the reward for diffi cult cases, the money is always refunded where the remedy fails to cure. The price of a bottle is $5, and that is the cost of a cure. Drummond MedicineCo., 48-50 Maiden Lane, New York. Agents Wanted. The Prize Cotton Planter. [The News and Courier.] The prize cotton reformer in South Carolina, so far as report ed, is Mr. William F. Claussen, of Florence County, who has usually planted 250 acres of cot ton, but will plant only 210 square feet this season. Who can beat this record ? We be lieve it is the best one in the State, and, if so the Agricultur al Society should give tneplucky agriculturist a gold medal. His grit in declaring and asserting his independence of the one-crop system is well worthy of public recognition. When we said that Mr. Claus sen, of Florence County, who had reduced his cotton area this year from 250 acres to 210 square feet, was probably the prize cotton reformer in the State, we had no idea that his record could be beated. Now we are inform ed that several farmers in Sum ter County have beaten it, inas- niuph as they have “reduced their acreage to nothing.” We suppose that nobody can beat this record, but we are not go ing to make any assertions to that effect and risk getting caught again. If anybody can beat it we should be pleased to hear from him. May be some excottonot hns given away his farm. Send in all the returns. Malaria and Broken-Down Constitution Waycross, Ga. Dr. W. H. Whitehead. Dear Sir—At your request I will state my case. Some years ago I contracted malaria in its most violent form while living at Newark, N. J. I consulted various physicians and took numberless preparations recom mended as “sure cures,” but it stuck to me like a brother—or more like a mother-in-law. I finally came South, and while here tried new remedies, said to always cure malaria, and it still stuck to me, and you know the broken-down condition I was in when I came to your P. P. P. (Prickly Ash, Poke Root and Potassium), and 1 improved rap idly, and am to-day in as good health as I ever was—in fact better. As a remedy for a brok- endown constitution it has no equal. Yours, etc., T. P. Cottle. The Origin of Bangs. Pittsburg Commercial: The bang is one of the latest innova tions among women and girls. It had its origin in the reforma tory for girls on Blackwell’s Is land, New York. The inmates were in the habit of getting away, and it was difficult to recognize them after changing their apparel. It was first sug gested to crop them, but this was considered too sweeping. The bang was then adopted, and it was a perfect mark. For ! some reason or other the style struck the popular fancy, and in the course of a few years af ter its adoption as a mark in the reformatory became one of the fads of fashion. •*>0 • Old Doctor Drummond, After years of patient study and experiment has given to the world a preparation which is an absolute and permanent cure for every kind of Rheumatism. Ask your druggist for it. The p-ice is $5, but it is a large bottle and will cure vou, or the money will be returned. If you are offered something else, write direct and we will send you a bottle by Ex press prepaid. Drummond Med icine Co. 48 50 Maiden Lane, New York. Agents Wanted. Survivals of the Middle Ages. William Wallett,“theQueen’8 jester,” has died, and it is be lieved this office will not be fill ed again. It is one of the most interesting survivals of middle- age life. There will no doubt be a protest after Tennyson dies against another appointment to the poet laureateship. There was a time when the Court jes ter was a more important per sonage than the Court poet. Riza Pasha, at Constantinople, in 1858, had a Court jester who was a woman, and Montezuma, when Cortez found and worried him to death, had, ifis believed, two Court clowns, one of each sex. Consumption Cured. An old physician, retired from practice, having had placed in his hands by an East India mis sionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy for the speedy and permanent cure of Con sumption, Bronchitis, Catarrh, Asthmaandall Throat and Lun Affections, also a positive an radical cure of Nervous Debility and all Nervous Complaints, af ter having tested its wonderful curative powers in thousands of eases, has felt it his duty to make it known to his suffering fellows. Actuated by this mo tive and a desire to relieve hu man suffering, I will send free of charge, to all who desire it, this recipe, in German, French or English, with full directions for preparing and using. Sent by mail by addressing with stamp, naming this paper. W. A. Noyks, 820 Powers' Block, Rochester, N. Y. Bibb s—How de do, Bob? Where’s sis?
