THE DARLINGTON MASS MEETING It is particularly gratifying to Thk News that so many counties of the State have re sponded to the call issued by Wade Hampton and others for the State Convention to be held in Columbia on Thursday next. This paper has earnestly advo cated for sometime past that this convention be held and the favor with which the call has been met and the interest taken in it in every section of the State give promise that the convention will be well attend ed and that it will in some man ner furnish us a way out of the present political chaos. A number of the delegates al ready elected to the convention are well known throughout the State. Their devotion to South Carolina has been tested on the battle field and in the political arena. They have never had any thought or motive other than for the good of the State and we can, therefore, with rea son expect that their councils on Thursday next will be direct ed by a love for South Carolina and her people. A mass meeting of the Demo crats of Darlington County, who are in sympathy with the call, will be held in Darlington C. H. on Monday next, for the purpose of electing eight dele gates to the convention. It is sincerely desired that all who wish a good government for South Carolina will attend. No factional lines will be drawn. All Democrats, whatever thei past affiliations may have been, who desire a change in the pres ent condition of affairs and the restoration of unity and har mony among the white people, are cordially invited. The meeting is called for a laudable purpose and every man who has the interest of the State at heart should be present. The Girls State Industrial School which the Legislature determed to established will be located at Anderson. A num ber of towns made bids for the school, but Anderson secured it as its bid was the highest, a suitable site and $75,000. Col. James G. Gibbes, agent of the sinking fundcommission, has had preferred against him by Mr. A. L. Morrison, of Georgetown, charges of gross mismanagement of the affairs of the commission. Mr Morri son had been in the employ of Col. Gibbes, but had since had a disagreement with him. Col. Gibbes says he can answer all the charges and it doer, appear that the alleged irregularities are capable of easy explanation. The Travellers Rest Demo cratic Club, in Greenville County, elected seven delegates to the* County mass meeting held in Greenville County, on Saturday, for the purpose of electing delegates to the anti- Tillman State Convention to be held on the 24 inst. Two years ago this club was strongly for Tillman and some of the dele gates to the mass meeting were Tillman delegates to the County convention of ISM. This, seeming paradox, is a plain fact, and is due to yur attixing very low prices to very high grade goods. B.O. BRISTOW. vJm is THE CITADEL ACADEMY. The Citadel Academy, in Charleston, was visited on Mon day by a serious fire. The in terior of the main building caught, and, as it was difficult to teach the fire, great damage was done before the flames were extinguished. The domitories were badly damaged and most of the cadets lost all of their clothing, save what they had on at the time of the fire. The exercises of the institu tion will not bo suspended, how ever, for the recitation rooms were not injured and Col. Cow ard, the Superintendent, with his n lomitable|pluck t andeneig intends to resume the exercises immediately. Until further ar rangements can be made, the the cadets will use the Roper Hospital, which was kindly of fered them, for sleeping apart ments. The Citadel was well insured and there is no reason why the damages can not be speedily repaired. If more mon ey be needed for this purpose, we feel sure that the people will uphold the Legislature in appro priating the necessary amount. The Academy is very dear to the hearts of many people of the State and they feel keenly the loss sustained by the institution. Interwoven, as it is, with the history of South Carolina, the old Military Academy is sacred to our people.
