While our people had the greedy flames eating up their property and threatening to de vour the whole town on Satur day night, while the forked tongues of tire were yet leaping towards the skies and the em bers and sparks were flying wildly and madly through the air, dismay was in every heart. But now that quiet has been re stored and the town has been saved, we can reflect calmly upon the results of Saturday night, disastr u as they were. It is said that tires do a town good and we trust ours will be no exception. Indeed, there is no reason to be discouraged. It is true that some of our Citizens lost heavily and the losses will be hard to bear. To all these losers Thk News and the people of the community extend their heartfelt sympathy We wish for them success in their busi ness, in the future, that will compensate for their losses on Saturday. Darlington is a progressive town and it will soon rise, phoe nix like, from the ashes. Wen w hear on ail sides the property owners in the burnt district speaking of rebuilding imme diately, and all the new struc- tunis will necessarily be of brick. Of the twenty-two stores burned all were frame save one. The burnt district, which now looks so bare and bleak, when rebuilt with handsome brick What Our Neighbors Are Doing And Seying.—A Brief Resume of the Week. PHILADELPHIA. The continued wet weather has thrown the farmers con siderably behind with theh* work. Mr. D. C. Stuckey, of Bish- opville, was the guest of Mr. J. T. Truett on last Sunday. Mr W. D. Blackman’s little thirteen year old daughter, Mamie, was taken from this world by the ruthless hand of death ou the 21 ult. The fam ily have our sympathies. We would judge from present indications and from past and present circumstances that the peoj 1} will l e as strong for Governor Tillman this year as they were two years ago. They believe in the majority rule. Mr. W. D. Blackman has sold his it‘am grist mill, together with his gin, to Mr. W. J. Du Bose, of Cypress. Mr. Black man’s customers regret this change, because his mill made such an excellent quality of meal. Mr J. F. Gamer, the Super visor of Registration, was at this place last Saturday, but he did c.imparatively little work. Up to the 27 ult., he bad regist ered only 1<X)4 voters. He says that there seems to be a lack of interest, especially among the whites, in regard to the duty of registering. The editorial in the last issue of The News on this subject was timely and to the point. CLYDE. All of our sick are better, ex cept Mrs. Lena Smith who is still quite sick. The new road has been open ed, except at the creek. This part will not be opened until summer. NEW TAXATION. The County Officers Required to Ms’ e Returns for Taxation of All Funds in Their Hands. TJie Clerk of the Court for Darlington County has recei e 1 instructions from the Comptroter ; General, through the Auditor, to the effect that he must return for taxation all moneys in his hands. The moneys represent funds belonging to unset led es tales and sales and the retun • ing of them is a new departuie in the matter of taxation, t not having been done in the past. The Clerk has obeyed the in structions by filing with the Auditor a return of all such moneys. The Sheriff and the Judge of Probate received simi lar instructions which they also complied with. i Snow Tobacco Stick. i liave accepted the agency this sea son for the above stick. It is the best contrivance within my knowl edge on which to cure tobacco. No funner can successfully cure liis crop without it. 1 am also a«eut for the Berne s tobacco transplanter, which waters and sets the plants at the san.e time. No waiting for rain. The Spring Term of Court for Darling ton County. The Spring Term of the Court of General Sessions was called on Monday at 10 o’clock Judge J. J. Norton presiding. Up to the hour of our going to press last night, no cases of impor tance were tried, the time being consumed in a number of mat- t.TS of little public interest; The following convictions were 1 secured : Alexander Byrd, ma licious mischief; Cassie' Caston consequently not more than one half as much guano will be used this year as last. The congregation at New Market enjoyed an able sermon on Sunday, from Rev. E. M. Merritt. His text was from I Corinthians XIII 1-2. Mr. J. C. Jowers closed his school on Friday last, when he gave his pupils a little enter tainment. We all regret to have Mr. Jowers leave our com munity. JASPER. We have plenty of water.
