"LET US HAVE PEACE.”
We are on the eve of a politi
cal campaign, which, from the
present outlook, promises to be
even more bitterly and hotly
contested than the one of 18U0.
There is, therefore, more than
ever, need that th) spirit of
compromise should prevail in
the ranks of both factions. The
arraying of class against class,
and brother against brother,
the sundering of the ties of kin
ship and friendship, and the heat
and passion, cannot but bring
evil to the State and distress to
its citizens. We are one people
and owe allegiance to the one
mother State. Our interests are
common and we are confronted
by a large negro majority.
How much better will it be,
then, for the two wings of the
party to “flop together.” Let us
have peace and the abundance
of prosperity and good—will that
will spring from the union of a
people that should never have
been hostile to one another.
The suggestion has been made,
and we think it a good one, that
both factions unite upon an ac
ceptable man. A candidate
should be chosen that is dis
tasteful to neither faction
There are many men in the
State who will, under no cir
cumstances, vote for Tillman
and,^ indeed, there are a large
number who once advocated his
election, but now realize that
he is a failure. On the other
hand there are many who will
not support those who were ex
treme in theiropposition to Till
man. Therefore, each side, for
the sake of harm my. s ioul 1
give in a little, drop the leaders
of their respective factions in
the campaign of 1800, and cen
ter upon a man that can unite
the vote of the party.
This can easily be done. Each
Democratic club can show, by
its endorsement of a safe, con
servative man, that its members
are for compromise and peace.
It will not be hard to find a
good man, for there are many of
them in the State. Men like
Hagood, Wallace, Orr and Shep
pard will answer the purpose.
They have made no enemies in

of incendiaries. It is estimated

weeks. The citizens of the town
are greatly disturbed.

The United States Furniture
Company, of Chicago, now
practically controls the entire
school furniture business in this
country.
A house was destroyed by fire
in Nashville, Tenn., on Thurs
day night, and a young man,
namea Thomas Bell, who was a
lunatic, perished in the flames.
The house of George Cramer,
i farmer living near Brainard,
Minn., was destroyed by fire on
Friday. His wife and three
children perished in the flames.
On Sunday night, in Wash
ington, Howard Schneider kill
ed his brother-in-law and mort
ally wounded his own wife,
while the two were returning
from church.
The warcloudhas blown over.
Chili has expressed willingness
to make reparation for the as
sault upon the American sailors
and there is now nothing to pre
vent an amicable settlement of
the trouble.
