A vessel was wrecked off the coast of Newfoundland on Thursday and two women and five children were drowned. Mrs. Pattie Lochridge. of Nashville Tennessee, killed her three children on Sunday and then killed herself. Slje was in sane. On Wednesday night of last week the city council of Colum bia sold the famous “Columbia canal” to a syndicate of Boston capitalists. The sub-treasury scheme was condemned in the Mississippi State Democratic Convention on the 15th inst. by a vote of about four to one. The Ohio State Democratic Convention was held at Cleve land on Wednesday of last week Governor Campbell was renom inated on the first ballot. The first bale of new cotton was brought to Albany, Geor gia, on Thursday, by Brink Savage, who raised it on his Dougherty County plantation. A new hotel at West Superior, Wisconsin, collapsed last week and five men were killed, four severely wounded, of whom one will die, and seven others were badly hurt. While a party of eight men were seining in the Tennessee River, near Murray, Kentucky, on Saturday, they got into a swift current and five of them were drowned. Capt. 8. Y. Tupper, one of Charleston’s oldest and most prominent business men and a very higly respected citizen, died in that city on Saturday in the seventy-fourth year of his age. The monument in memory of Stonewall Jackson was unveil ed at Lexington, Virginia, on Tuesday. Gen. Wade Hampton presided at the ceremonies and Gen. Jubal A. Early delivered the oration. Senator Butler has received a challenge from President Stokes of the Alliance to enter into joint discussion of the sub- treasury bill, at Prosperity on the 2!)th inst. The Senator has aocepted the challenge. Several of the richest men of Kansas City have organized a company for the purpose of sup plying cool air throughout the city by means of pipes. This is the first thing of the kind ever attempted in this country. The Baltimore American says that the encampment of the National Farmers' Alliance will be held near that city in Septem ber. An auditorium will be erected which will seat 12,000 and 250,000 persons are expected to be present. Near Russellville, Kentucky, last week the family of J. H. Cornelius, a well-to do farmer, was poisoned by the food eaten at supper. One person has died and five are dangerously ill. Arsenic is supnosed to have been put in the millc. Judge J. A. Warder, a very prominent lawyer of Chattanoo ga, who, a short time ago in a family quarrel, killed his son-in- law, wounded his daughter and was himself seriously hurt,com mitted suicide last week. He became afflicted with melan cholia after the terrible tragedy occurred. While the funeral services of his wife were being preached at Tower Hill, Illinois, on the 12th. inst., Rev. W. B.F. Corley suddenly fell from his seat and died in a few minutes. The services were suspended and Mr. and Mrs. Corley were bur ied together. A train passing along the rail road running alon^ the line of the Manchester ship canal fell over the latter's embankment near Liverpool England on Sat urday, killing eleven men who were working under the head ing. In addition to the men killed many workmen were in jured. Gen. J. R. Weaver of Iowa, of “Greenback” fame, Col. L. L. Polk, President of the Far mers’ Alliance, and Jerry Simp son, the Alliance member of Congress from Kansas, spoke in favor of the third party to a large audience in Atlanta on the 15th inst, They will can vass the whole of Georgia be fore they return home. With one exception all the Farmers’ Alliance lecturers of Kansas have declined to instruct the people in the principles of the sub-treasury scheme. They say the people are opposed to it almost unanimously. A vote is now being taken in the Sub- Alliances on the question of dropping the scheme from the Alliance platform.
