An amusing story is told of
an old Arkansan known as
“One Gallus” Phillips, who for

stories, eating watermelons and
taking an occasional pull at a
jug kept in a shady place, one
of the company suddenly ex
claimed:
“Gallus, dinged if yander
ain’t a human man a flotin’ |
down the river!”
“What?” “Gallus” asked, i
getting up and gazing intently, *
for the sight of a “floater” al
ways sent a thrill through the!
old coroner, for it gave him a ,
delightful glimpse of a jxiker
game with the boys.
“Right out yander just this |
side of the island.”
“Hanged if 1 don’t believe;
you’re right!” exclaimed old
“Gallus,” striking a trottoward '
a canoe a short distance away. I
The object des'gnated did'
prove to be the body of a man. I
The corpse was drawn to the'
shore and an inquest was held. |
In a coat pocket were found!
seventy-five dollars and a letter, j
giving the name and address of
a brother of the drowned man.
Old “Gallus” was a man of
strict honesty; and as he stood)
holding the seventy-five dollars |
in his hand, he remarked:
“Boys, it will take twenty-five
dollars to bury this fellow de
cently. I w ill appropriate that
amount and will send the re- j
maining fifty to his brother.”
Just then some one remarked: j
“He’s got a^ pistol in his hip)
pocket.”
“Who has?” ‘Gallus” asked.
“The dead man. Don’t you
see?”
“That's a fact,’’said “Gallus.”
“And, by the way,” he added,
“this diskivery puts a different
phase on the matter. I’ll fine
him fifty dollars for carrying
the pistol. This makes it come
out even. We won’t have to
send his brother anything. ”

Times in 1048. The world does
not contain half-a dozen news
papers to-day without them. In
the early days, when people

names in those days. There is

The Chinese are said to be the j
most ingenious in their adver- 1
tisements. They make use of
their deformities, even. “The
Celestial Cook-shop of the pox-
marked Wang,” “The Celebrat
ed Eel-pie shop of heavenly
beauty,” are samples of oriental
enterprise.
Americans have carried the
art of advertising to the great-,
est perfection yet attained. The
devices used in this country to
draw the attention and capture ‘-'•'ess
the mind, or the eye, are in
numerable.
Public curiosity offers to the
shrewd advertiser a wide and
more prolific field than any
other perhaps. Who is there so
discerning that he has not read
some attractive, racy article in
