his post of duty. Engineer MeFadden |campaign, just as
was connected with the old Oregon and
California Railroad company for many
years. During that time (extending
over a period of tyrenty-two years) he
had lieen -in a good many aecidtmts
and liail run many narrow escapes.
All will vividly remember the fearful
accident at Lelsuion Junction, in wliich
Engineer John ("l tig Jack”) Miller and
I'ireman Quint (iuthrio were killed.
The tragic fate of ‘'Rig Jack” seemed
to have made a very strong and lasting
impres-ion on the mitid of Engineer
MeFadden, and had been regarded by
him somewhat in the lightof n presenti
ment. Very soon after Miller’s death
an old friend of MeFadden met the
latter, and naturally the circmnstanees
of the accident and the Lite of Miller
were discussed.
•'Well, John,” said the old gentle
man, “tho fate of poor Jack ought to
be taken as a warning by all you rail-
mad era. Take my advice and get out
of it w hile your skin is whole. Sooner
or later it .catches all who follow it.

ness.” MeFadden smiled sadly and
-aiiI lie knew it was full of danger, and
added. “It eutches nearly every fellow
w ith his boots on who follows railrtwul
big long enough.”
Not long after Miller's death McFad
den met with an accident near Turner
station. The train was coming down
tho track at a lively rate when tho lo
comotive suddenly plowed into a band
of frightened sheep. The crushed and
mangled carcasses kept piling up in
front of the engine until they reached
a height of several feet MeFadden
put on brake* and reversed, but the
locomotive climbed up on top of the
blooding mas:.of mutton and went over
into tho ditch. MeFadden and the
IJ ’cman had a very narrow escape from
.! atli. and did not come out of it with
oat serious injuries. MeFadden was
laid up for some time, Imt on recover
big went buck, like a brave follow, to

One of the large brass frames for a
piano lamp is covered with white net
gathered at tiie top and bottom. The
same quantity of black net with a large
polka spot is prepared for the outside
covering by outlining each circle with
red silk in Kensington stitch, and fill
ing the inside of the circle with French
knots in red on the upper half of each,
and small gold and silver spangle* on
the lower. This outside covering is
gathered and put on over the white
and tied at the top with red ribbons
long enough to form a rosette on one
side. Over the bottom put a friil of
Valenciennes lace, to support one made
by cutting plain black net into strips,
and running upon one side five or six
rows of red baby ribbon. The upper
edge i* turned and gathered with a
