There are many theories about the affair. Some persons say that Mr. Townsend was seen ou his porch in the afternoon, ami that he seemed excited, as though something was worrying him. Others seemed to think he committed sufeide and set the house afire himself. Ilis wait ing boy says that he left Mr. Townsend lying on his bed, reading, at 6 o’clock - this even ing, ami that he was perfectly calm ami rational. Still others hint at foul play, ami think- it probable that he may have been murdered and robbed; ami that the criminal set fire to the build ing to to conceal the crime. Mr. Albert Theime, tho near est neighbor, says that when he went to bed lie noticed a light burning in Mr Townsend’s bed room. He had just got in bed when he heard a report like the explosion of a lamp. He ran over, but by the time he got to the bedroom door the room was nothing but flames. Holloway, the Secretary of the Society, fur- nisln s to the press the following, which, he says, will appear this week in the Cotton Plant: The report of the committee, appointed to prepare rules to govern competitors for the pre miums offered by the Columbia Phosphate Company, is as fol lows: Special premium offered by the Columbia PhosphateCotnjfa nv through the State Agricultu ral and Mechanical Society of South Carolina: 1. For the largest yield of cotton upon one acre of laud, manured with a fertilizer manu factured and sold by the Columbia Phos phate Company $200 2. For the; econd largest yield of cotton upon one acre of land ma nured with a fertilizer manufactured and sold h y t h e Columbia Phosphate Company $loo Rules by which competition for the foregoing premiums is to bo governed: 1. The area of land planted to compete for the foregoing premiums must be one acre, ac curately measured, and must • be located outside of the limits of any city or town. 2. No other manure or com mercial fertilizer must be used in the cultivation of the com ing crop than such as tire man ufactured and sold by the Co lumbia Phosphate Company, but no limit is fixed to the amount of such fertilizer to be used. This is left to tho judg ment of the competitor. 3. Each person intending to compete for the' foregoing pre miums must file with Col. T. W. Hollowoy, Secretary of the State Agricultural and Mechanical (Society, Pomaria, S. C., on or before the first dav of May, 1891, written notice of such intention, and must in said notice indicate clearly the location of tho land so planted, giving the name of the plantation and of the town ship and county wherein located. , ■t. 1 he President of tho- Soci ety will appoint an agent in each community in which there will he competition for the forego ing premiums to supervise the harvesting of each competing crop, who will aecurdtely weigh and keep a record of each pick ing, and at the end of the har vest season report the result in writing to the secretary of the Society. 5. Each competitor shall make to the secretary of the society a written statement, under oath, et ting forth in detail the char acter and quality of the land cultivated, the name and variety of seed planted, the brand of fertilizer used, the amount ap plied and mode of application, the system of cultivation and manner of harvest, the gross yield of seed cotton and the total cost of the *crop.
