The corn crop is short and the pea crop is shorter than it lias ueen for many years. —We hear a great deal about the syrup made from sorghum turning sour. This is because the manufacturers failed to cook the juice sufficiently. —The Rev. John Stout, of So ciety Hill, preached an interest ing sermon at Antioch Church Sunday, from tho 25th Psalm, 7th verse. [News and Courier Nov. 18.] Mr. Robert S. Pringle, lie Contractor who has charge of the construction of the northern extension of the Charleston, Sumter and Northern Railroad from Sumter to Bennettsville, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Pringle reports the work on tho line to be progressing rapidly, and Charleston will in all probability have a through line to Bennettsville, and thence into the heart of North Caro lina, by next spring. The route from Sumter to Lynch’s River, the boundary between Sumter and Darlington counties, has been nearly all graded, and is ready for the laying of the track. The track has already been laid for four miles above Sumter, and in a southerly direction about six miles from Bennettsville. The heaviest part of the work is now being done on the lower end, and it will be but a short time bbfore the line will be in operation from Sumter to Dar lington. While this extension will not be completed soon enough to transport any of the cotton crop of the present season, it will carry the planters of the Pee Dee section their fertilizers next spring, and will be ready to bring all of the cotton raised in that section to this port next season.
