first day of the session. The
Rev. John Stout, the first speak
er. remarked touchingly on the
influence of a finished life as
exemplified in the useful career
of Col. Edwards, and spoke
tenderly of the rememberance
in w T hich he was held. The
Rev. G. B. Moore referred to
the strong Christian character
of the deceased.
The exercises of the second
day w-ere opened with prayer
by the Rev. B. G. Covington” of
Florence. Rev. G. B. Moore
was elected a delegate to the
annual meeting of the American
Baptist Publication Society.
The Home Mission report was
then read, and a strong speech
was made on the subject by Dr.
T. A. Bailey, corresponding
secretary of the Home Mission
Board. The report was un
animously adopted. Rev. J.
Hartwell Edwards, of Cheraw,
delivered a fine address, in
which he urged the ladies to
organize new women’s mission
ary societies. The Educational
report was then read and adopt
ed, after forcible addresses by
Revs. J. L. Vass, G. B. Moore
and John Stout. Rev. B G.
Covington read letters from the
following churches, asking that
they be allowed to form the
Florence Association: Florence,
Willow Creek, Mizpah, Elim.
M t . Zion, Ebenezer, Sardis,
Beulah, Ephesus, Cartersville,
Evergreen and Peniel. This
was referred to the committee
on the State of the Churches,
and the request was afterwards
granted. The committee o n
the time and place of the next
meeting reported in favor of the
Tuesday before the second Sun
day in October next, at Antioch
Church. The introductory ser
mon of the next meeting will be
preached by the Rev. C. L.
Dowell, and the missionary ser
mon by the Rev. J. Hartwell
Edwards. Remarks endorsing
the proposed Baptist orphanage I
were made by various members, j
and the work already accom-1
plished towards the establish
ment of the institution at an
early day was approved. A
letter from 8. Colgate, 55 John
St., New York, was read by the
Rev. S. M. Richardson, asking
for the various minutes of the
Association from 1832 to the
present time, which are to be
tiled and preserved with the
other historical documents of
the Baptists of the United States.
At the evening session on;

a circular, claimed to be issued
and distributed by the Republi
can executive committee of the
6th Congressional district, in
which it is claimed that a com
pact had been entered into by
the Straighout Democrats and
the Republicans to the effect
that the former would support
Deas for Congress if the latter
would support Haskell for Gov
ernor. Cupt. Wm. Quirk, chair
man of the Straightout Demo

that any compact or under
standing whatever bad been
made with the Republican party
with the above stated object in
