Thk County Fair begins day, and the prospects of its success are of the very bright est at this time. Thk regular meeting of St 1 David’s Lodge will be held on Wednesday evening next, Nov. 5. All masons in good standing are cordially invited to attend. Thk Rev. John Stout, of Soci ety Hill, delivered a lecture in the Y. M. C. A. Hall at Cheraw on Monday evening last, under the auspices of the Chautauqua Circle. Mkssrs. Edwards, Norment & Co., have recently received a large Hall safe, which is the most complete affair of the kind in every respect that we have ever seen. Mk. C. Alexander, the ad ministrator of Mrs. Hymes’ es tate, will sell the furniture and other personal property of the Darlington Hotel at public auc tion on Monday next. Mrs. R. C. Carter, of the Swift Creek neighborhood, was severely burned last week, her clothing having accidentally caught fire while she was boil ing clothes for the wash. Mb. H. M. Smith has twenty- one desirable lots in the town of Darlington, which he will ofifar for sale at public auction on Salesday next, an excellent op portunity for making a good in vestment in real estate. Parties desiring first class work in the way of photographs could not do better than patron ize Mr. Ernest A. Smith, our lo cal artist, who has given general satisfaction to the people of the town and county since he first came among us a year ago. After a careful consider ation of the matter, the County Executive Committee came to the conclusion that it would be unwise to hold a mass meeting here on Monday last, as order ed by the State Executive Com mittee, so we were spared the affliction. Capt. R. A. Brand, of Sumter, who was recently appointed so liciting agent for the Atlantic Coast Line, was in town this week interviewing some of our merchants. Capt. Brand is one of the most popular men in the State, and we are pleased to learn that his new business will bring him to Darlington frequently in the future. Mr. N. H. Blackman has in his possession the original grant of a tract of land made to one of his ancestors by George III. Mr. Blackman is able to trace the title to his property in one continuous chain back to that remote period, and he is de servedly proud of the interest ing record. Mr. D. M. The average farmer who uses cotton seed as a fertilizer puts 25 bushels of it on an acre, to-1 gether with 200 pounds of acid, i Instead of using the 25 bushels of cotton seed in this way, if he would bring it to the Darlington Oil Mill, he could get in ex- j change'for it 250pounds of meal, 100 pounds of acid and 1,000 pounds of hulls. The farmers I of Darlington County are re- j quested to think over this mat ter, and see if they do not come to the conclusion that what they would be’ receiving in ex change for the 25 bushels of j to obtain one of the best machines now on the American market, cotton seed would make a better fertilizer than the present plan October 2, 1890. One of the largest planters in the County, who has been ex changing his seed in this way for the past five years, says that he has saved by it at least 33i per cent on the cost of his fertil izers. •haractcr of the man and hia qualifi cations as a teacher.
