Blackwell went to Columbia last week armed with a strong petition for the pardon of Green Burch, and paid a visit to the Governor. The Captain is very hopeful of obtaining ex ecutive clemency for his protege. The track of the C. S. & N. road lias been laid for a distance of fourjmiles fromBennettsville: and most of the grading and trestling between that point and the river has been complet ed. On the 15th day of September, Mr. Marion Lide found two oil cloth coats in the road near Lide’s Bridge. The owner can recover the same by calling on Mr. Lide and proving his right to the property. The County Treasurer a c- cidentally omitted his Lydia ap pointments from the list which ho has been publishing for the past week or two. Our Lydia friends will find that the proper oversight has been duly correct ed in this issue. Creek expect to finish their work this week, and will then move their appliances to Lynches River for the purpose of erecting a similar over that stream. Scarborough, of Bishop- ville, presented a very hand some cake, which towards the close of the evening was voted to the prettiest young lady present. The contest was be tween Misses Pauline Barrett, Mabelle Carter, and Maggie Holmes, three belles respective ly of the counties of Sumter, Darlington and Florence. The excitement during the voting was great and the race was a close one ; it was finally won, however, by the Florence belle, who received 191 votes.
