Thomas, Sheriff Cole’s efficient deputy, will regret to learn that ho is desper ately ill at the residence of It is father, Capt. W. H. Thomas. Rev. Father Wright, in charge of the Catholic Mission at Darlington, paid his usual monthly visit here last and celebrated Mass at the res idence of Mr. C. Mooney on Friday morning. Ax a meeting of the trustees of the Graded Schools held re cently it was decided to raise the monthly contingent fee of pupils from 10 cents to 25 cents, and the patrons of the schools are requested to bear this fact in mind. Mr. C. H. DeLorme, of Doves, has obtained a position with Chas. Elias & Co., of Charles ton, dealers in dry goods and millinery, and will take pleasure in filling promptly all mail orders which may be sent him from his friends in this section. Two of the leading doctors of the community give it as their mature professional op i n i o n, that there has been less sickness in Darlington during this Sep tember, than there has been for the same month any time dur ing the last thirty years. The Rev. Mr. Pearson, the distinguished evangelist, who expected to visit Darlington in October, has written to express his regrets that a complication of engagements will compelhim to indefinitely postpone coming here. Prof. C. A. Seabrook was in town on Tuesday making his arrangements preparatory to leaving for Columbia, where he is to open a classical school on Oct. 1. • It affords us pleasure to state that the Professor's prospects in his new venture are exceedingly bright. Capt. J. C. Blackwell has gone West to buy a car-load of fine horses with which he ex pects to return within the next ten days. The Captain is one of the best judges of horses in the County, so we may expect to see some “beauties” when he gets back. The value of advertising can never be overestimated. Mrs. John Swygert inserted a little notice in The News of last week to the effect that she desired to employ a young lady to assist in her fashionable millinery establishment, and within twenty-four hours after the publication of the paper some six or seven applications for the position had been re ceived. The house of Edward Rich ardson, colored, on Dr. J. C. Willcox’s planta t i o n, was broken open recently in the night time, and about $:15 in money and a number of small articles were stolen therefrom. Suspicion pointed to one Moses Brown, colored, as the perpe trator of the felony, and he was arrested in Florence and brought here to jail. Mr. H. M. Smith, the owner of the house recently occupied by Mr. J. A. Hearon on Flor ence Street, purposes enlarging and improving the structure considerably by adding a second story to it and a long “ell”. When these changes have been made, Miss Mary Spain expects to rent the building for the purpose of conducting a first class boarding house there. We desire to call attention to the advertisement of C. S. Pitcher, which appears in an other column. Mr. Pitcher is one of Charleston’s most relia ble merchants, and carries a large stock of cutlery, agri cultural implements, belting, cotton gins, presses, <ftc. Those of our citizens who may need anything in his line will find it to their advantage to correspond with him. The dime entertainment at the residence of Hon. G. W. Dargan on Thursday evening was a success in every respect. All whoattended itseemed to en joy the exercises, and the ladies cleared a goo4 sum of money for the society. The feature of the evening was the rendition of “Extracts from a Bad Girl’s Diary,” by a talented young lady of the County, who simply captivated the delighted audi ence. The office of the Southern Express Company at this place will shortly be moved to the lower portion of Mr. G. W. They all go into McCall & Burch’s handsome store just below us and give us the “go-by.” A Dangerous Amusement. Several gentlemen were standing in front of the post- office on Saturday morning waiting for the mail to be open ed, when one of them called attention to the fact that a crowd of little boys were run ning recklessly from bale to bale of a pile of cotton in front of the Enterprise Grocery, and remark ed that it was an excellent plan for getting a leg or an arm broke.i. While the words were on his lips one of the little fellows fell head-foremost from a bale, and struck the ground heavily, inflicting painful in juries on his head and shoulders. This method of amusement seems to be a popular one with the little boys of Darlington. Parents, put a stop to it, unless you wish to run the risk of hav ing your boy brought home on a stretcher any day in the week! A Long-Suffering People. As we have had occasion to mention before in connection with the same subject, the busi ness men of Darlington are a patient lot of people. We doubt whether there is another town of its size and importance in the United States where the people are willing to wait for their mails so patiently and tranquilly for several hours longer than there is any neces sity for. It seems right funny that the Government should supply all the facilites for rush ing our mails through nearly a thousand miles of space in a little more than twenty four hours, to be put on the back of a decrepit old man at the depot, who walks slowly and feebly to town with the sacks. The worst feature of it all is the mail that is received here every morning on the Wades- boro route. The train arrives here at a quarter of eight o’clock, and the mail should be in the office and open by nine. Instead of that the old man sits down along side of the track with his sack, and calmly waits for the arrival of the freight train coining up, so that the Wadesboro mail is never de livered to those for whom it is intended any earlier than eleven o’clock, three hours after it has reached the depot. A promi nent business man of the town says that on Friday last ho lost a hundred dollars which he would have made if the mail from Wadesboro had been de livered when it ought to have been. Owing to the enormous increase in the revenue which the Postoffice Department de rives from the town, Darlington deserves and should receive better accommodations in this respect. Instead of au old man hobbling up with the sacks on his back at the rate of a mile in half an hour, a thorough-bred horse should deposit the mail at the postoffice within three minutes after its arrival at the depot.
